"I've lived in the darkness a long time. Over the years my eyes adjusted,

until the dark became my world and I could see"

Derek

At the end of the day I go get on my motorcycle. As I'm driving home I see Sasha walking towards the outskirts of town. I pull up beside her.

"Hey." She jumps and I laugh. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. Do you want a ride?" She looks at me incredulously.

"On that thing? With you? No thanks." She resumes walking. Ouch. I pull up beside her again but this time she keeps walking.

"Okay look, I'm really not a bad guy once you get to know me, and I know for a fact that the next closest house is about two miles, and that is my house. Just let me take you home. I promise you will get there safely." I say, she stands there for a minute just looking down at the ground.

"Fine." She says so quietly that I almost don't hear her.

"Okay get on," She does. "Now wrap your arms around me." I feel her stiffen behind me. She slowly wraps her arms around me and I start going. She holds on tighter and I laugh. I know that I need to stop by my house before I take Sasha home so my mom doesn't get worried. I pull into my driveway. "I need to stop here for a minute, okay?" I hear her groan and I can't help but laugh. I pull her off of my bike and start leading her to my house. She reluctantly follows. We walk inside and I call out to my mom.

"In here Derek!" Mom shouts from the kitchen. I grab Sasha's arm and lead her to the kitchen. "How was your day hon....oh! You have brought a girl home!" I see Sasha freeze in place. I grin at the look of horror on her face and she glares at me. But my mother doesn't notice and goes on.

"You know, I was hoping Derek would bring a girl home for so long. You must be really special." She gushes on. I speak up because Sasha looks like she is about to bolt.

"Mom, she's not my girl. She is a friend I am giving a ride home. But I knew you would want me to stop by first." The look on my mother's face fell a little and Sasha's relaxed. Mom asked if Sasha wanted to stay for dinner and she politely declined.

"Okay, another time then." My mom says with a huge smile on her face. Sasha smiles and nods her head. She looks at me and I tell my mom we have to go.

Sasha

I lay in bed replaying what happened today. When he dropped me off at my house he had asked me if I wanted to be his friend.

I had said, "You don't want to be my friend, trust me, nobody ever does." The I turned and walked into my empty house and shut the door, going to my room that is right by the front door. There I let the tears come as I memories of my real parents flashed through my mind.

"You're and ugly good for nothing girl!"

"You will never be good enough!"

"Useless! You are Useless!"

I stand up and go make dinner for when my foster parents get home. I also clean up the house in the process. When they do not come home later that night, I put the food in the refrigerator and go to my room. I stay home for the next few days waiting for them to come back. I have been crying on and off for the past five days. It is clear that they aren't coming back. I hear a knock on the door and ignore it, but a minute later there is a knock again.

"Sasha..I know that you are in there, please let me in." Derek. Why is he here? Oh right. He's here because he has to be, so he can get out of trouble.

"Go away Derek." I try to say but it comes out more of a sob. I hear the door open and curse myself for not locking it. I hear him walk up to my door and slowly open it. I close my eyes, turn up my music and try to disappear into the mattress. I lay there for a couple minutes and I think he may have left. But no such luck, I feel my mattress shift from his weight I keep my eyes closed.
