Chapter 23

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy. when skies are grey. You'll never know dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away" I whisper as AJ slowly closes her eyes.

It's been three days since she was born. My life has changed. All I think about is her. That I need to protect her from everything. She's my world now. Daryl is going to love her. I place her on the bed and grab her diapers,bottle and blankets ready in my bag. I had to go back home just in case Negan comes back.

"You sure you have to go?" Maggie says from the door.

"Yeah I don't want Negan to kill another person because of me." Maggie and Jesus helped me a lot with AJ.

"I'm gonna miss her" Maggie says staring at AJ with a smile. I grab AJ and walk outside. Jesus is going to take me home. I told him I was okay driving home alone but he insisted.

"I'll be back after Negan stops by. Doctor Carson has to check on AJ." Because AJ is premature he needs to check on her every week.

"Okay be safe." Maggie gave AJ a kiss and hugged me.

"Wait have you been to Jamie's grave?" Maggie asked before I got into the car. I look down at the ground and shake my head.

"It's too painful." I gulp down the lump in my throat. I don't want to cry. I get in the car while Jesus puts the stroller he found in the trunk.

The gates open and Jesus starts the car. I wave goodbye to Maggie and Sasha.

The drive didn't take long. We got to Alexandria and Eugene opens the gate. He parks the car and we get out.

"Hey Eugene" Eugene waved looking at AJ with a puzzled look. Jesus takes the stroller out and gave me a hug.

"I'll see you later"

"Thanks" I watch him leave and make my way home. Well Rick's place. I knock on the door and Carl opened the door.

"Elena!" He yelled but realized I had the baby in my arms.

"Hey Carl. Where's your dad?" I ask as I walk in.

"He went on a run with Aaron. She's beautiful Elena" he says.

"Anything new?" I said placing AJ in her bassinet. She looked so peaceful sleeping.

"Tara's back"

"Does she know about?" Carl nods sadly. She must be heartbroken losing her friends and girlfriend.

"Can you watch AJ for a while?" I hand him the baby bag and walk out. I head over to the medical house. I had a feeling she would be there.

I walk in and see her on the ground. She leaned against the wall staring at her hands.

"Hey" I said making her jump.

"Elena what are you doing here! And not pregnant!" She got up and run to me. We hug tightly.

"AJ is sleeping. How was the run?"

"Not good. Lost Heath. I'm sorry about Jamie and Daryl" she says.

"I miss them. I'm sorry about Denise" I hug her again. We looked at each other with tearful eyes.

"Can I see her?" Tara wiped away her tears.

"Yeah you'll love her. She's so quiet like Daryl" I chuckled. We walk back home. Judith was on the floor playing with some cups while Olivia cooked.

Tara picked up AJ and smiled.

A few hours passed. Tara left and I Judith was sleeping. AJ looked around with her eyes wide open.
