Luke: "Did you have your breakfast?"
Me: "I did. How about you?"
Luke: "I didn't. I am full just thinking of you."
I laugh at Luke's joke as I scroll through the previous texts that Luke sent me while I was in class. We have been on call since the morning class finished. It's already afternoon. "Oh my god, why is it so funny? I shouldn't even be laughing at it."
"Don't fret. Everybody at the pool was laughing at him. You don't have to feel bad for him," Luke replies. I re-adjust my headphone as I laugh some more.
"You know, Love? Your laugh sounds really beautiful and I want to hear it every single time I talk with you."
My laughter dies at the end of his sentence. Rose comes just then, running to me after her class finished. "Gotta go. Lunch. Talk to you later." And I hang up.
"Lyn," She runs to me and hugs, "I thought I was dying."
"Well, I see you are alive and kicking," I reply. We laugh as we make our way to canteen.
Rose observes me for a while. "You have been on call since I went into that death class. Who are you talking to?"
"It was George," I reply too fast.
She set her eyes on me for a few minutes more. "Okay." We walk in deafening silence after that.
"He has been acting really strange these days," Rose suddenly speaks up when we sit down for lunch. "I feel like I can't get him happy like I did long ago."
I stare at her sad face then go back to eating, my heart beating at thousand miles per second. "He must be busy with school work and stuff. Don't mind it, Rose. He will warm up again when everything is fine."
Rose nods. "I hope you are right, Lyn. I was so worried," She gives me a crescent smile. "Thank you."
I reply her with a smile in return. My stomach drops with guilt kicking in. I just lied to my best friend.

A few days before
"Why are you making me laugh too much, Luke Jonathan?" I laugh as I roll to the side of the bed. Luke has yet again called me and we have been talking every night on a daily basis since he first messaged me a day ago.
"Because I want to hear you laugh, Sherlyn."
The way he say my name. It's so luring that I feel an urge to hear him say it again. I laugh it off to keep my mind off from it. I have a boyfriend, I can't feel this. "You are joking."
"What if I am not, Love?" Love... He called me love. Laugh, Sherlyn. Just laugh. When he doesn't hear any response, he clears his throat and moves onto another subject. "Hey, I have something to ask. What can I do if I want to surprise someone, a girl maybe?"
I smile at the change of the subject. I was starting to feel awkward. "You can sing her a song or something. It's girls' favorite when you dedicate a song to her."

My mind drifts as Rose continues on about how Luke serenades her with her favorite song on her birthday. It's already Friday and Rose is at her parent's house for the weekend.
"I never imagined he would do that for me. He said he was shy but he jumps on the stage out of the blue. And he sang my fav song, saying it is dedicated for me. It was so romantic I thought I was dreaming! My best birthday present ever!" She screams through the phone.
I pause my Netflix and put the phone away from my ear. "Easy, Rose. I almost got my eardrums exploded."
She squeals from the other side. "Sorry, doesn't mean to do it."
