Chapter 9

Tall, blonde, muscular, gorgeous. I knew suddenly that I had to get my flirt on with this guy.

“Hi, princess,” he said with a wink. I knew that he was the arrogant player kind of person, and it was just the type I needed.

“If I’m the princess, are you my knight in shining armour?” I asked him, softly.

“If you want me to be, sweetheart,” he said, his face amused. “I’m guessing you’re the beautiful lady everyone in the town is talking about,”

“Hey! Josh!” called Haze from behind me. I gritted my teeth. I had a nice line planned and he had to ruin it. “What’s up, dude! I haven’t seen you in a while! When did you get back?”

I realized that they were close friends, because Haze only spoke like that to Jared.

“Well, I got back last night, and now I was talking to this beautiful lady,” he said, eyeing me.

“Vanessa, “I said, sticking out my hand. I was hoping that Jared would come out to see me with him.

“Josh,” he said, shaking my hand. “Well, Vanessa, I guess I’ll be seeing a lot of you,”

He left with a wink, following Haze into the kitchen. Although he was good looking, I didn’t really fancy him. In fact, I like Jared and Haze a lot more than him. He just wasn’t my type.

A few minutes later, Matt, a regular, came in. He wasn’t with the blonde girl he was usually with, which was surprising.

“Your usual?” I asked him. He smiled wanly and nodded knew there was something wrong, because he was always full of smiles.

“Where’s Haze?” he asked me. He knew that I didn’t usually get on with Haze, and he always avoided to mention him whenever I was around, or vice versa. So I knew that he really needed him this time.

“He’s in the kitchen with Jared and Josh,” I said. “Go on, I’ll give you permission to go in there. Just don’t tell Rita,”

He shook his head. “It’s ok,”

I knew clearly why he didn’t want to go in there. Being only 17 years old, he usually avoided hanging around with Haze when he was with his friends, because it made him feel like a little brother tagging along. Matt always looked up to Haze, but Jared was never his best friend.

“D’you wanna’ talk?” I asked him. He shook his head.

“Listen, I know it gets better when you talk,” I told him. “And if it’s girl troubles, then the best person to ask advice to is a girl,”

He sighed, and sat down opposite the counter. It was a Sunday morning, so most people were having a lie in, hence why the café was empty.

“You guys always tell me to make a move on Carla,” he said. Carla was the girl he always came in with. You could tell, just by looking at them, that they liked each other more than friends, but they never admitted it. Once Haze made a big point to Matt about telling her that he likes her, and since then, Haze had always been nagging for him to make a move.

“So yesterday I tried to kiss her. And she stopped me and told me that she wanted to think about it. She hasn’t been answering my calls or anything,” he said, and he truly looked heartbroken. “I’d much rather be friends with her, than have nothing do to with her,”

His situation was so similar to mine, but the difference was that the girl did like him. Once glance at them and you could tell that they were both crazy about each other. I had a faint idea of what was wrong, especially since I had experienced it before.
