Are we able to breathe while in hell?
The answer is yes.
Zila breathed and panted; she sat in her closet, hiding. Hammer pounding steps echoed and made the walls tremble; he searched for his money while screaming. Judith was at work now. It was Clayton, her father's turn to start his fright night.
"You little bitch, where's my money?"
Zila attempted to ignore her father's yells. It was a matter of time before he found the money tucked away inside his jacket inner pocket, but Zila was to endure his anger during that time.
Zila's hand trembled as she wrote in her phone diary.
MEMO: March 15th
Toooooooooooooooooooooooooooo-
Absorbed by the shouts, Zila's finger remained delayed on the O key, it pressed, while her eyes fixed her closet door, hoping it would not spring open.
Memo: Today is my birthday.
No one wished me a happy birthday.
No presents, just the belt lashes.
I guess he remembers my birthday. He reduced their number for the occasion. He was diligent; perhaps it was his gift, for I have known worse.
I've grown too big for my closet, my legs hurt, but I can't move.
Things can't get better, and I don't want to see them get worse.
Memo: What did I do to deserve this?
Perhaps it's a past life, my Karma.
I must have been the queen of bitches to deserve this.
Zila recalled when the nightmare began?
Seven years old at the time, Zila watched her father's fall. Clayton lost another job, but this time things were different. The company sued him for having slept on the steering wheel of a school bus.
After a hefty fine and a stay in jail, the father the little girl knew vanished.
Judith left their home, angry, leaving Zila with him; Clayton wasted more time at the bar and bringing bottles to drink at home.
Zila's father loved music; his vinyl used to play 24/7 in the entire house. Thanks to him, she discovered: The Rolling Stones, Nirvana, The Doors, Pink Floyd, U2, David Bowie, and many other artists.
The only thing he shared with Zila and all she knew about Clayton Richards was he loved music.
Like children of her age, Zila played, and like most children, she was clumsy. And one day, the irreparable happened, the little girl bumped into her father's treasured vinyl rack. As the disks dropped to the floor, her heart skipped a beat, thinking she broke her father's precious vinyl.
