Song: Car Crash by Matt Nathanson

Chapter 2
~the collision~

It didn't take long for my life to pick up some sort of routine again. With Natasha and the baby always around to keep me company and Michael always bursting with 'excitable' stories from work in the evening, there was hardly anytime to wallow—like I had been doing for months in the period of waiting to find out where I was to go for my senior year.

"Honey, you've told us this one already. It's boring." Natasha reminded Michael, washing the dishes as he told us the story about Dave breaking the company car in the car wash.

Ava was currently in my lap, her big blue eyes rimmed with dark lashes like her dad, watching me as she chewed on her small fingers. Michael swooped in, picking up his four month old daughter, instantly melting with love.

"Daddy tells great stories. Mommy's just jealous." He smiled triumphantly, holding Ava over his face as she squealed in delight, grasping hold of his hair. "Her cheeks are quite red, Nass, is she feeling okay?" He asked worriedly, hugging the squirmy Ava and kissing her head to check her temperature. "She's hot too."

"She's teething," I spoke up. Grabbing a toy I had seen her chewing on from the ground and passing it to him.

Michael looked at me unsurely, "She's so young. She can't be getting teeth already...could she?" He looked deflated at the thought of her growing older.

"Your sisters right, my love. I noticed this morning her cheeks were a little flushed. I have to stop by and get some teething rings the next time I'm in town." Natasha said, hanging her apron up on a hook before sitting on the fluffy cream coloured rug with us.

Michael looked depressed as he held Ava's chubby face, "My poor little apricot." He pouted.

"She's got her mommy's strength, she'll pull through." Natasha giggled, ruffling his combed hair comfortingly. "She'll still be your little girl no matter what her age is, my love."

Micheal smiled gently, turning to kiss his wife on her forehead. "Of course."

"You guys make me sick," I chuckled, standing up. "I'm going to take a walk. Kiss the little "apricot" goodnight for me." I teased and quickly skedaddled out of the house before I could face the consequences of making fun of the ridiculous nickname.

I wasn't ten minutes from the house when I saw her.

The yellow lighting of the streetlamp and the dusky glow from the darkening blue sky, created the perfect setting around the beautiful grey and white wolf; who was grooming herself thoughtfully. Her soft ears perked up as I slowly crossed the road to get a better angle, my camera clicking all the while as I took pictures. She sniffed the air, half hidden from the pale green willow trees as she searched for the wearer of the scent. From the magnified view of the camera lens, I could see the pale blue of her eyes, sending chills down my body as I noticed the thin scar across the left. That was when she looked at me—her eyes like the fountain of knowledge and passion as I stood frozen in my spot. The spinning world around me stopping for that one unexpected moment.

Maybe it was my heart pounding in my ears, or my existence only being about her, but for one reason or another, I didn't move when the car sped down the road. It was only after I felt the bone shattering collision that I saw the shiny black car skid along the road as it tried to stop too late. By the time my head hit the pavement, my world had gone black and completely silent.

Uh oh. Wasn't my song choice great 😂
