I pull into our gravel driveway before my sister does. That's a first. I get out and she pulls in. I listen to her car stop. "I win, Rinah." I shut my car door and head up to the porch to unlock the door. I check my pockets but I don't have my key. I turn around. "Rinah?! You got your key?!" She throws hers to me and I catch it. "Thank you!" I turn back and unlock the door. I walk in and head into the kitchen for a glass of sweet tea. I close the fridge and see a note on the fridge. I open it up and read it. Be home late. Don't wait up.
-Dad. Figures. Rinah walks in the kitchen and grabs a Pepsi. "Whatcha reading?" I shrug. "A note from dad." I hand it to her and she reads it. "What you want for dinner?" I shrug again. "It's your turn to cook anyway." She groans under her breath and heats up the oven. "350° sis." She waves me away and I walk upstairs with my backpack. I sit down on my bed and get started.
I begin to start on my English homework when I get a video call from mom on my laptop. I answer it and my mom smiles. "Mia! Oh, I miss you." I smirk. "I miss you too mom." She wipes away a tear that I hope is a tear of joy. "Are you crying mom?" She shakes her head. "No honey. Just tears of joy. Where is your sister?" I sigh and get up. I open my door and yell downstairs. "Rinah! Mom wants to chat with you! Now!" I hear her groan and she hops up the stairs. She gives me a sly smile then sits on my bed and starts talking to mom. I shut the door and go downstairs to finish dinner.
Rinah comes downstairs just as I am setting her food down at the kitchen island. "So what did mom have to say?" She scoffs. "Just about her stupid new husband's job." I scoff. "Figures."
We sit down and eat in silence. We didn't even look at each other. After about what seemed like an hour, I got up. "I'm going to bed. See you in the morning." I head upstairs and change into a black tank-top and a pair of gray sweat pants and climb into bed. I yawn a couple times and fall into a deep sleep.
