(That's Sophie btw.)
Because I'm not the most emotionally stable person; and also because I'm trying to avoid all things that have to do with Owen, I spend my Saturday napping. When I wake up again at around five my phone is blowing up with notifications. I have at least a dozen messages on Whatsapp, two missed calls and my Facebook feed is overflowing.
"Ohmycheesticks," I gasp. I tap on the blue F. "Holy crapcrackers!" There are at least five different videos I can see and all of them are titled "Owen Knight CHASES @ToniTyron", with slight alterations specifying the venue of the chase. I scroll down in a trance. They have over two thousand views already, most of which are from students that go to my school – and Owen's. My phone vibrates.
"Hi?"
"Toni! What the fucking hell how did you not call me right away? A hunk chased you through a supermarket? A hunk with tattoos?!" Jane screeches through the phone. "Hold on, Jamie wants in on this." I hear a click and a second later the second Kingston-twin is a part of our call.
"Toni – so not cool!" Jamie repeats lamely and I actually have to laugh. He couldn't be rude if he in fact tried.
"Guys, it happened five hours ago." I say by way of defending myself.
"Whatever, spill!" They say simultaneously. Jane and Jamie have been part of Sophie's and my inner circle since they moved here at the beginning of final year. They are actual twins and, quite literally, inseparable. Jane really hit it off with Sophie at one of the parties that go on every weekend but I never attend, and the twins sit with us at lunch ever since then. Jane and I don't really click on a girly level, but we appreciate our similar sense of humour and shared level of intelligence. Jamie, on the other hand, is my male counterpart in almost every way.
I quickly recount the details of my morning as well as the events that led to Owen Knight hating my very existence, since Owen was sent away before our last summer and the twins arrived after. Jane interrupts after every sentence while Jamie drops encouraging consolations like a waterfall. Talking to them both at the same time is always extremely nerve-grating.
"So," Jane drawls out when I finish. I can tell she's already bored by the whole thing. "He'll be around school?"
"Jane! Don't you dare think of hooking up with a- with a delinquent!" Jamie exclaims in very true horror. I giggle at the two and vaguely wonder if they're in the same room.
"Jane, I'm with Jamie on this one. You really don't want to get near Owen. The heavens know what he picked up at that place." Again a fleeting feeling of guilt overcomes me when those words leave my mouth. But then I think of his closely shaven head and bulky arms and that feeling is replaced by a shudder.
"God you guys are acting like I said I want to date the guy." I can literally feel her rolling her eyes. "I just want to welcome him back. And maybe introduce myself." I picture her wicked smile all too well and sigh.
"Jamie I'm leaving this one to you." I say. My best friend gives a heavy sigh.
"There's no saving her," He pauses. "Hey are you guys free? Want to go catch a movie later?" I've gotten used to the absurd fact that Jamie and Jane spend every waking minute together and yet still never quite know what the other is up to. So I say I'm free and we wait for Jane to clear up her plans before texting Sophie as well as Ana, Jamie's girlfriend.
