The names Alexandra Esperanza. In school I'm known as the "perfect girl" with beautiful brown wavy hair, a perfect tan complexion, and smokey gray eyes. I guess I could thank my parents for the looks, but they're always busy working. They made me realize that I have to get straight A's, so I can grow up and live a successful life. My dream is to eventually repay them for all they did for me. But the people at school don't know this. They know nothing about me, but they sure do have their preconceived ideas about me.
I don't pay attention to all of that though. More like I can't. I'm too busy worrying about my childhood friend, Angel. Besides being my best friend, she is basically the whole world to me. She has been with me through thick and thin. We were each other's entertainment when our parents were out working. And my parents worked a lot; mainly because of me. My mom had gotten pregnant in highschool from my father, and married young. They didn't have time to finish their education. They had to provide for me, and still do. Unlike me, Angel used to live in a big house. She wasn't rich, but she wasn't poor. That was until her father died, when she was just 5 years old. Just after, her heart became weak, but it was never a very serious issue until now. Her mom had to downgrade their lifestyle because her being a librarian couldn't pay for it. And that's how we met.
She had to move into the same apartment complex I lived in. Besides her being the best neighbor, she was super funny and brought out the best in me. But recently Angel had had her first major heart attack.
(Right now)
I walked right through the hospital doors in a panic. My voice was frantic in asking the receptionist where Angel was. The understanding lady, she must've done this many times being her job, calmly told me Angel's room number and pointed the way.
My legs wanted to run but my mind told me to walk. I rapidly burst through the door and was met with a robot-like Angel. Wires were connected to her everywhere. She was sleeping soundly. Gosh, she was so beautiful. She had luscious black-blue straight shoulder length hair, big green eyes, and the best personality. Although she was Puerto Rican, she was almost as white as paper. Mainly because she was always inside; her heart didn't allow her to be active.
Not wanting to wake her, I grabbed her hand and began to pray. I wasn't religious but her for I would try anything to make her better. Her mom walked in and gave me a sympathetic look. We exchanged heartfelt greetings and provided emotional support to each other. The doctor walked in, holding a clipboard and rubbing his chin.
Then the doctor said in a stern clarifying voice,"I have news", he took a breath before starting his next sentence," Angel needs a heart transplant. She will be put on a waiting list, in the meantime here are the current expenses and the cost for surgery. You have about 1 year before her life will be at risk of death. The sooner the better." He left the paper containing the total amount on the table and quietly left.
"I can't afford this," Angel's mom said frantically. I looked at the paper. It was a huge number, clearly not affordable for her. I looked her directly in the eye and said," Don't worry Mrs. Cabello, I'll find a way to help". Mrs.Cabello said softly," oh, you're too nice, but I'll find a way." I knew she wouldn't. The bank wouldn't lend her anything because of her bad credit and the insurance companies knew they were a high risk family with little income.
That's when she collapsed! Mrs. Cabello fell straight to the floor, hitting her head hard. Crack* I could hear the breaking of something, but was too panicked to think. I called for the nurses and they rushed her to another room.
That's when I knew that I was completely alone.
