chapter one

greengrove, 2016

"yeah mom i just parked my car,"

"how am i supposed to grab my stuff and stay on the phone with you,"

"i'm hanging up, i'm hanging up," i ended the call and let out an annoyed sigh, grabbing my bag and getting out of my car. the parking lot was sort to say empty except for the few late students and the guard posted at the gate.

i started towards the entrance, wanting to get my schedule, get to class and have this day over with. i'm sure most high school students'll agree with me, first days suck.

just before i reached the main office i stopped at a glass case that showcased all greengrove's accolades over the past 20 or so years. in the centre of all the meaningless certificates and last year's yearbook, is a photo frame of the school's football team.

my eyebrows perked upwards, good to know there'll some eye candy to get me through the day.

the secretary barely acknowledged my presence when i stepped into the main office, lucky for me there was a slight breeze thanks to the air conditioning, so i just slid onto the wooden bench and waited for the secretary to call me from the hundreds of people she had waiting.

i stared around at the empty office and sighed, crossing my legs before mindlessly reading the posters on the walls.

guidance counsellors were really filled with crap, i thought reading over a motivational poster with a lion printed onto the side.

"here ya go dear," the secretary said holding out two printed pages out to me. i got up from my seat and managed to clear the distance between the bench and her desk in record time.

after muttering a curt 'thanks' i rushed out of the main office not wanting an early run-in with the principal, so that he could tell me that he was keeping an eye on me.

my eyes were trained on the page in front of me, figuring out the classes i would be getting and the room numbers. a door suddenly whipped open, barely missing me before slamming against the wall.

a ginger haired girl, awkwardly rushed out of the room and down the hallway, hastily adjusting her skirt as she disappeared out of sight. by then my eyebrows were already almost blending in with my hairline, when a tall guy walked out of the room.

he turned my direction, and halted in his step. he looked me up and down before rolling his eyes and brushed past me.

dick.

i peeked to get a good look at the room, the first thing i saw was a mop lazily leaned against the corner of the closet while there were bottles and containers with labels on stacked on the wooden shelf against the wall.

a janitor's closet, how classy.

"you must be the new student," the history teacher, mr hamilton gushed excitedly. the head of his students shot up like meerkats as they peered at me, hoping to uncover ever secret of the new girl with one single glance.

"hayley dumont," i said smiling politely, while on the inside i was already making a dash for the exit.

"come on in," i'm already inside, "and take a seat wherever you like,"

a cheeky grin crossed my face, "can i sit there?" i raised my eyebrow and pointed at the leather armchair clearly belonging to the teacher.

he chuckled clearly finding my joke more amusing than it actually was, "funny girl, that seat is unfortunately reserved for the teacher," he winked at me, while i could see the majority of the students roll their eyes.
