It was quiet.
For a long time, Hikaya hadn't experienced quiet. There used to always be someone screaming, frantic footsteps echoing through the halls or wild laughter coming from her friends.
But now, it was quiet. The only thing that moved was her heart pounding in her chest and the low whirr of a fan.
Hikaya couldn't remember how long it had been. All of her memories seemed to blend and clump together, now, - everything was speeding by so quickly.
Needless to say, she was already exhausted to begin with. She was the one taking care of eleven other kids her age. And as one thing fell apart after the other... the more anxious and the more exhausted she was.
Without most of her friends beside her, and all her surviving friends constantly arguing and getting into fights, everything continued to collapse and wither, day after day.
It felt infinite. It felt like it was never going to end.
Hikaya shook her head in an attempt to shake the negative thoughts from her head. She leaned far back in the chair she sat in, looking up absentmindedly at the ceiling. She closed her eyes for a moment, and the memories flooded back. All of her friends, the people she was supposed to protect. The corpses. The begs for forgiveness and the screams. Horrified looks. Vernin, covered in blood.
Hikaya opened her eyes, only to look down at her hands and realize they were balled into tight, sweaty, fists. She shuddered, letting out a long exhale before slamming her hands down on her desk. She rested her head on her desk, and all of a sudden, a familiar lump became lodged in her throat. She was trying, she really was, but the memories kept coming back. It was like it was all constantly on hopeless rewind. She missed all her friends, more than she had worded to everyone.
She had nothing else to do, no other outlet. She didn't want to write, no, she wouldn't be able to focus, much less spell. She didn't want to read, she still wouldn't focus. Study her texts? Reading. Talk to her friends? No.
So she gave up and cried. And cried and cried and cried. The tears streamed almost nonstop from closed eyes. An olive–green waterfall. All she heard now was pounding, choked sobs, and the constant internal screams of "I'M SORRY." She banged her head on the edge of the desk, over and over. And over.
It really sucked.
When she felt a hand on her head Hikaya jolted upward, wiping her eyes quickly, and stared up at the intruder.
It was a surprisingly concerned Emydia.
Hikaya shot her an anxious grin and desperately tried to fix her hair. "O–oh, hi. How–how are you?"
Emydia frowned, and bent to get lower to the oliveblood. "Better than you, it seems," she noted, studying the tear tracks covering Hikaya's face.
Hikaya looked away and rubbed her arm, somewhat embarrassed. "Why are you here, anyway?"
"I heard crying," Emydia said flatly. She then picked her matesprit up with ease and sat on the ground, placing the smaller troll in her lap. "Tell me about it."
Hikaya dissolved in a green flush and stared at her hands. "No, no, I... I don't think that's appropriate."
"C'mon, Hik," Emydia persevered. "A little birdy once told me that it's helpful to let out the feelings."
"I-I'd rather not burden you w-with the problems of a-a lowly m-midblood such as m-myself," Hikaya hiccuped.
Emydia's mouth curled into a slight smile. "You're breaking. Give in to the love and support I will shower upon you!"
Hikaya giggled, then immediately stopped herself. "But really, I don't w-want to be a b-burden!"
"You won't be," Emydia assured her. "We all have had issues in the past that you've helped us with just by talking to us. I don't think I've ever seen Vernin willingly let someone hug him before! You have this... this thing about you that puts at ease. And when you're upset or nervous or on edge, that reflects in our temperaments. I think."
Hikaya stared thoughtfully at the fuschiablood, chewing her bottom lip. "You got that from someone, didn't you?" She smirked at Emydia's shrug. "That was really cute though. I feel a little bit better, I think."
The two girls beamed at each other.
