January"Sylvia, crank up that television!" Hank yelled to his wife from the kitchen. Sylvia, dressed in her diner apron, rushed to the old box TV they had sitting in the corner and turned the volume up. Standing in front of the courthouse in the next city over, James Harris, the news anchor, was finishing up his six o'clock segment. They were only able to catch the end.
"-we covered the tragic scene where a young girl, who we now know as Erica Duncan, was killed early last week. Duncan, sixteen, was heading home from a friend's house when she was struck head-on by another vehicle. William Short was driving well over the speed limit when he missed his stop sign and collided with Duncan. Short, eighteen, is being charged with aggravated vehicular homicide. Authorities have informed us that Brennan Sanders, Short's passenger, is being held at the Juvenile Delinquent Center and is facing charges of possession of drugs with intent to distribute. No other details are being made public at this time, and we will continue to follow the story as new information is released."
Sylvia looked at the booth where her three young sons sat doing homework. She couldn't imagine or comprehend what the mother of the young girl must be facing. The thought alone sent a dart of pain through her heart.
After saying a prayer for the girl's family and the boys involved in the accident, she resumed her duties.
"It's a horrible situation," her husband said walking into the dining area. He closed the short distance between them and pulled her into a hug. Looking at his children, he worried about the problems they might face in the town where they lived. Hoping from the bottom of his heart his children would never struggle with addiction; he whispered into his wife's hair, "someone needs to get this drug problem under control."
