Pete was standing in front of his diner, closing the door for the last time when he heard someone approaching from behind. He turned to see who it was.
"Brennan, it's been a long time," he said, taking the other man's hand in a shake.
"It has. I heard you were closing the place down and I wanted to come see if there was anything I could do."
"Sylvia's been wanting to move out west, near our boys for a few years now. I've been putting it off for far too long," he said looking back at the diner.
"I hate to hear you're leaving. Bentley's going to hate it too. She's missed Sylvia a lot. She would have been here with me, but the baby isn't feeling the greatest right now."
"I heard you two had a little one. How old?"
"Jake is three months old now. It feels like yesterday he was born."
"Time will fly by, now that you've started your family. Be sure you cherish all of it, Brennan."
"Yes, sir, I will. You take care of yourself, Pete. Let me know if you ever need anything. I mean that."
"I know you do and I appreciate it."
Pete watched as Brennan climbed into his car and drove away. He'd never forget the day he watched the young man walk into his parking lot and lay down for the first time. Nor would he forget the girl wearing her heart on her sleeve walk out there and do what he'd yet to see anyone else do.
He chuckled to himself as he recalled his wife's comment about them making a cute couple long before Brennan had let Bentley hear his voice.
He was thankful for the changes Brennan had made in Hillview. And even though he was leaving the town behind, he could feel it in his bones; Taylorsville and Hillview had more in store for their futures.
