Normally the idea of immortality is scoffed upon, but not in the world that Scarlett Peters lives in.
Each country has an immortal personification, and it scares people. People are always afraid of what they don’t understand; they’re scared of something that’s different.
When a test is taken across the US rumor spreads that ‘they’ –the countries – might be involved. At the end of the week Scarlett receives an odd letter from an Alfred Jones saying that she is invited to New York City. She gets the impression that it’s a prank but is soon reassured that it’s real.
The day before she leaves she gets a call from a man named Arthur Kirkland and detects that something isn’t what it seems. A little over analyzing, paranoid thinking, and whispers of the rumors lead her to the conclusion, and the truth, that Alfred and Arthur’s real names are America and England.
Even though the countries are thought to be terrifying all powerful beings, Scarlett learns that they’re anything but. Something is always hiding around a corner whether it’s some crazy antics or a little bit of magic. But she still finds herself trying to help get rid of the sadness she senses in one of the nations, and the others aren’t always as happy as they let on. Life in New York for Scarlett is far more than she bargained for.
