phil's pov;

'Daniel James Howell is up next.' the woman's voice echoed through the room.

A tall boy with brown curly hair stood up and walked to the front of the auditorium we were sitting in.

He made his way over to the microphone and holds up his sign.

On the piece of rectangular cardboard he had written something in beautiful blues, greens and greys; 'umi', together with some kind of symbol I couldn't distinguish.

'Hi, I'm Dan and this year my theme will be umi. Three years ago my theme was seaway, the year after that one I chose to do brine, then I picked ocean and this year I have chosen to make my challenge umi. Umi is the Japanese word for 'the sea'. I've chosen this because even though I will never be able to go to Japan, I wanted to make my projects more international. I will try my hardest to do as much research as I possibly can to make sure my assignments are as accurate as possible. Thank you.'

He gifted the room full of art students a small nod and a smile and quickly paced back to his place.

Slowly, my mind drifted off.
Daniel wasn't someone who was extremely outgoing; he wasn't one to say hi when you met him in the hallway, he wasn't one to attend any activities outside of school, and he wasn't one to sit with friends during breaks.
But he also didn't seem mean; he wasn't a bully, he shot people a quick smile when they told him hello and he always engaged in a conversation when someone started one.
But he always had this mysterious cloud around him, rushing like a foggy, unclear tornado, making it impossible to get through to him.

I quickly jumped up when I heard a female voice announce 'Philip Micheal Lester, it's your turn now. Please step forward.'

I stood up from the hard, plastic, black chair and made my way over to the stand with the microphone.

'Hello, my name is Phil and this year I chose to focus on the theme 'relationships'. I want to try to find out what the difference is in the relationships I have with my friends, family and strangers etcetera.
I will try my hardest to show that in this years art. Thank you.'

I shot the group of people a quick smile and saw a pair of amber eyes look at me in bewilderment.

I quickly regained myself and power walked towards my chair, some people smiling at me while I made my way back.

I had to endure the gathering for about another 30 minutes and then we were finally dismissed.

All the art students flowed out of the room, almost like water seeping from a river into a waterfall.

I went back to my dorm and grabbed my notebook; time to make a plan for this years art assignments.

~le time skip to the next day at school because im a bad author xo~

As soon as the bell rang, I made my way out of the classroom and walked to my locker.

As I walked through the hallway where the music classrooms were, I saw a tall, dark figure leaning against one of the walls. He was wearing headphones and was tapping his foot on the ground.
I assumed he was tapping along with the beat of his music.
I impulsively decided to walk up to him.

'Excuse me?'

He looked up, took his phone out of his pocket, paused the music and slid off his headset. Did I spy some of a Muse album cover?

'I'm sorry, this is probably a really weird question..' I started. I stopped in the middle of my sentence.

He shot me a small, encouraging smile.

'I don't know if you remember but I chose the theme 'relationships' this year and I feel like I need to talk to some more people, I want to make some new friends, you seem extremely interesting, would you mind going out for coffee with me sometime soon?' I blurted out, anxious for his response.

He laughed, 'Of course, hand me your phone and I'll give you my number.'
He held up his hand to take my phone.

When he gave it back to me he said 'Text me whenever you would like to hang out, okay?'.

'Sure, thanks! Have a good rest of your day!' I responded.

He replied to that with a warm smile and walked into one of the music rooms.

I stood there for a while, glad I managed to maybe start a new relationship with a person.

All of a sudden I heard the wonderful sound of a piano being played and I felt a little smile appear on my face.

It sounded peaceful, small and calm.

I peeked through the window to see the same boy I just talked to, sit behind a piano. He was sat on a stool, bended over a tiny bit and his lips were parted slightly in concentration.

He looked adorable.

I snapped back into reality and remembered that I was actually meant to meet my friends at my locker.
Quickly, I walked away from the sounds that seemed to pull me closer to the brown haired, amber eyed, tall boy.
