Monica Smith and I used to work together at the company I now worked for. She'd left a year ago, claiming to need "greener pastures", but we'd remained in touch. Now I sat at her desk with Ross next to me playing on his DS, the both of us waiting for her to come. When she did, she wore a pained smile and sat behind the desk. "It's been a while. What do you need?"
I showed her the address. "I know you're in charge of all the houses in this area, so can you tell me who bought this one?"
She looked at it. "Well, I guess I can pull it up on the system. I mean, that's what friends are for."
Yes, friends are for sneaking confidential details and helping with explosion cases.
Monica sighed. "Oh, him."
"Him who?"
"One of our newest clients," she responded with a faraway look in her eyes.
I'd seen that look way too many times. "You're dating him, aren't you."
She blinked. "Hmm? I never said that! Why do you need to know, anyway? It's none of your business!" She reached for the keyboard.
I grabbed her hands and spun the computer screen to face me. "Bruce Dane, huh? He's gotta be rich judging by the price of that property. Unless..." I looked at Monica biting her lip. "Unless you agreed not to charge him because you were dating him."
Five tense seconds passed before she finally nodded. "He has a lot of money. But I didn't charge him because I like him. He said he didn't wanna pay. Carmen, you should've seen him. You would know, right?"
I shook my head. "No. What does he do when you're out with him? Does he talk on the phone, does he flatter you...?"
Monica sighed. "We went to this expensive restaurant on Saturday. He had to talk on the phone, and I guess I looked sad or something when he finished because he said he'd make it up to me."
"How?"
"There's this dance he's taking me to on Friday. I can't remember what it's called, but he said he bought tickets and everything."
I sighed. "He's using you, Monica. Here's my advice: don't go. String him along, make him think you're going, then cancel at the last second."
"What? But why?"
"It might kill you."
