Chapter One

9 1 1

I'm not from this world. I am not like other humans here. I am not human at all. I have my mother and father from my planet. I have my little brother as well.

I, however, do not remember my planet. I have grown up on Earth and the only reason I know I'm different is because my parents told me and my little brother and as well have showed us how we were different. We look just like humans, but our blood is darker, almost black normally, which is the first sign of our difference.

If you look close enough, you can see the differences between the two species. I have high cheekbones that are noticeable, but still look human. Also, our eyes have silver flecks in them. The last difference in our physical appearance is what makes us questionable to the human race.

Our hair is white with a silver tint.

My parents and brother dye their hair to fit in, but I keep mine. I keep it for my heritage and because it is a reminder that I am different. My parents dyed their hair different shades of blond and dyed my brother's hair bleach blond.

My name is Kana Lewis and I am a Lamia of the Vandal world. My family adopted the name Lewis to blend in here and stay hidden from others like us. That's what my parents say anyway. They say it is safer. There are others from Vandal on this Earth, that's what my father said, but they are mostly other species from Vandal even though there are also other Lamia here too.

Vandal is a world of all types of creatures. The Lamia are the most human-like. There are other species that could blend in here, and do, but the Lamia do it almost completely naturally.

My family is here hiding from the Revenants, which are the worst creatures on my planet. They have been coming after my family for a while now, and other Lamia and species, but we have always continued to flee. I do not associate with the human race because my family moves once a year which doesn't allow me to be friends with the humans. The human race has a significant amount of emotion while us Lamia control our emotions fairly well.

We are master minds when it comes to humans. I have yet to meet a human that could outsmart me. The emotion they have makes them weak and in doing so no matter who has tried to fight me at the educational facilities humans call school, I have never lost. I tried to be human once, but it did not bode well for me.

I had friends, human friends, before, but they did not last since I had to move. Now, we moved to a place east of the Mississippi River in a state I knew to be called Illinois to a small town named Elmwood Park. Illinois has the climate my species likes in the winter with the cold winters it has. We would not enjoy the summer, but it serves its purpose.

My parents never told me or my brother, Az, why the Revenants were after the species from Vandal. We were just always told they were dangerous and we needed to stay out of their reach. We were also never allowed to practice our powers so we didn't know exactly what Lamia could do.

Also, one last thing about the Lamia you should know is our eye color that goes along with our silver flecks is always a vibrant, bright color.

I woke up in our new house staring at the blank ceiling. I always put stars up to resemble the galaxy my planet was in. I always colored the star representing my planet red so I would never forget where it was. I sat up and swung my feet around to press against the cool, wooden floor.
