Amarie went to sleep that night dreaming of Devan and his laugh. She woke up thinking about how he talked but listened too. She stared at her phone for about half an hour thinking about whether or not she should call. She texted him and asked for his address. He gave it, and she headed over to his apartment. Amarie wanted to surprise him with her favorite cookies as a final test of if she could possibly date him. She forgot to knock but figured it would be fine.
It wasn't.
She stumbled upon Devan making out with a beautiful platinum blonde haired girl. The floor dropped from beneath her as the tray clattered to it, startling them.
"Who's this?" Amarie said quietly. Devan just stared at her in shock, and the girl flushed and stayed quiet.
"This is my girlfriend, Orissa."
"Orissa?!"
"Wait..." Orissa whispered.
"I can't believe you would string me along like this!" Amarie shouted.
"You never asked if I had a girlfriend," he said.
"I just figured I wouldn't have to ask if YOU asked me out!"
"Babe, I swear she's lying, she hit on me."
Orissa started to tear up as she whispered,"It's over Devan. I thought I could trust you, and that was a huge mistake," Orissa said. She turned to Amarie and said "I'm so sorry Amarie, I didn't know he would ever do this to someone. Especially not you. Not me either. I hope this doesn't affect anything."
"It hasn't, please, don't worry," Amarie said. She turned to Devan.
"You mean nothing to me anyways."
Devan looked pained by her sharp words. Amarie knew he had no right to be, and left, comforting a sobbing Orissa. She held her head high and slammed his door as hard as she could. She replayed her words in her head. Amarie still felt as though that was what needed to be said.
