Mina turned her head away from the TV to look at Jihyo beside her. Despite her sad tone, she didn't look particularly upset by the detail. They were just talking about how Jihyo had never been asked out on a date on a Valentine's Day or how she had never received any flowers or gifts or whatever stuff couples usually give to each other during this particular day.
"You haven't?" She asked, trying to recall the previous years and whether Jihyo had held cards or flowers.
Jihyo slowly shook her head, sadness overcoming her usually bright face.
"How come?" Mina asked again.
"I don't know." Jihyo shrugged and glanced towards Mina. "Maybe people are scared of me and think I'm not Valentine-material."
"But why haven't you –" The drama they were watching resumed and Mina fell silent because Jihyo's attention turned back on the TV.
She waited as patiently as she could until the next ad break, her fingers twisting together against her stomach. She felt bad for her friend. She had no idea what happened in the show because she was too busy concentrating on what she was going to say as soon as it hit a commercial break. And maybe she was a little distracted by peeking at Jihyo every few seconds to admire the curve of her nose and lips and big eyes.
When another ad break finally interrupted the show, Mina immediately turned towards Jihyo and asked, "Will you be my Valentine?" she suddenly felt butterflies in her stomach as those words crossed her lips.
"I mean, I know this is so sudden and all that, but I think you're totally Valentine material and I can make you a card, give you plushies, flowers and stuff." Mina blabbered.
Jihyo's eyes became even larger. She ducked her head in embarrassment, disbelief creeping into her heart.
"Not funny, Mina! Stop fooling around." She said, still flustered. Internally hoping that the younger wasn't making fun of her.
"I'm not." Mina said in a low, husky tone.
"Are you serious?"
Mina nodded as she held Jihyo's hand and intertwined their fingers.
"Okay.." Jihyo said breathlessly and when Mina's lips curled up into a big gummy smile, Jihyo's face suddenly felt hot, she blushed and smiled shyly.
"Does that mean you wanna kiss me? I mean that's what couple usually does on Valentine's Day, right?" Jihyo asked so innocently it made Mina want to pinch her cute fluffy cheeks.
Mina bit her lip and gave a one-shoulder shrug.
"Nah, not if you don't want to." She replied with a small laugh as her eyes shifted back to the direction of the TV.
Jihyo rolled closer, instantly drawing Mina's attention away from the colourful ads. Jihyo looked nervous, the same look she had on her face the first time she met Mina one and a half year ago. That time she had mistaken Mina as Korean and the same time she found out they would be sharing the same room.
"Stay still." Jihyo whispered, her cheeks reddening as she leaned forward. Mina hardly dared to breathe when Jihyo's nose bumped against hers and their lips touched. She giggled, and so did Jihyo, as they fumbled their way through a first kiss that wasn't nearly as romantic as the movies showed it to be.
Mina was the one who broke the kiss.
"Does that mean you'll be my Valentine?" She asked, staring deeply into Jihyo's tantalizing eyes.
Jihyo nodded and giggled again.
"Yes." She breathed, pressing another quick kiss to Mina's lips before flopping onto her back with her head on the pillow.
Mina was pretty sure her heart was going to beat right out of her chest.
"Yes, I would love to be your Valentine, Mina."
