The Least of us

Chapter 3: I'm a hero

 We were headed back to camp before I saw a small pond that looked fun to take a swim. I led Ellie over to it and I jumped into it after taking my shirt off. I popped my head out of the water and I looked at Ellie who was laughing. I smiled.

"Come on in the water's fine." I tell her still smiling. "I can't swim Kaleb." She looked as she walked over to the edge of the water. "I can teach you. Just jump into my arms and I'll catch you. I promise." I hold out my arms ready to catch her if she jumped. "Ok if you say so." She set her backpack down and she jumped into my arms. I kept her safe from drowning as I kept my arms around her. She wrapped her arms around my neck and she placed her head on my chest. "You ready to learn to swim?" I whisper in her ear softly. She nodded. "Ok just move your arms and try to reach the edge of the pond. I'll be right behind you if you need me." I let her go and I watch her swim to the edge of the pond like I had told her. She smiled at me as the water dripped from her hair and face. I smile back proudly. "Well I guess teaching you was easy." I say I swim up to her. She nods again.

"I guess swimming is easy and I just never knew it." She tells me happily. After a few minutes in the pond, we head back to camp. I kept my shirt off and I look at Ellie who was looking at my abs and the scars on my chest. I could tell that she was impressed with how hard my abs were. We reach the camp and Joel comes running towards us. "I saw a building on fire. Are you two ok?" He says as he inspects us for fresh wounds or burns. "We're fine Joel. Kaleb had saved me from a hunter that was trying to kill me." She tells Joel as she hugs me tightly. I Smile and hug her back as Joel slaps me on the back as a "You saved her butt again." kind of slap. Joel heads back into the shed leaving me and Ellie alone. Ellie yawns and she falls asleep while hugging me. I pick her up and I carry her back to the shed and I place her on a mattress that was in there. I cover her up with a blanket and before I could walk out, I feel Ellie pull me down beside her. She hugs me in her sleep. I blush like crazy. My face was all red as I lay beside her. She doesn't let go of me at all and I soon fall asleep beside her. I'm a hero. No, I'm her hero.
