Chapter Two;

“Have you talked to Rick yet?” I ask, making my bed, standing on the ladder of the bunk. “Yeah, he seems nice,” Jack responds. I nod, jumping down to the ground. Hearing a dinner bell ring, I grin, and say, “Good to know some places are still a little civilized.” I pull Jack’s arm lightly. He laughs, and follows me out to the main area. Rick pulls us aside, making small talk. He then announces our arrival, and everyone smiles a bit. The one that caught my eye, though, was a boy around my age, with sparkling blue eyes. I look down at that point, smiling slightly to myself. But not only does Rick introduce us to everyone, he has us sit at the same table as the boy. How great.  “This is my son I was talking about, Carl,” Rick says, and I look up to see Carl’s eyes already piercing mine. “Hey,” I say, sounding a lot more confident then I felt. You didn’t really have time to look pretty in an apocalypse.

He grins, responding with a quick “hey.” I blush slightly, looking down at the table. Jack nudges my arm slightly, and I look up at him, almost laughing at the sight of my brother trying to be intimidating. He raises his eyebrows at me, and glances at Carl. I shrug my shoulders, and smile up at him, still trying not to laugh. We all get up and grab a plastic plate, along with some old silverware. As we all head towards the little table of food, I feel someone next to me. “So you and your brother were alone for a few months? Must have to be pretty tough to go through that,” Carl says, and I nod. “It wasn’t all that bad, as long as we stayed away from herds,” I reply, looking to Carl. He really was cute, and to be the only kid our age in a whole camp must be hard on him. “So how long have you been here?” I say, gesturing to the prison. “Awhile now, not really sure how long. Not many people keep track of time anymore; we think it’s just easier to go by the seasons.” I nod in agreement.

Once we reach the table, I almost drool at the sight; bread, mashed potatoes, and meat. Carl caught me staring, and laughed. “When’s the last time you’ve eaten like this?” he asks, grabbing a bread roll and a couple of slices of meat. “Long enough for me to forget what they taste like,” I mutter, focusing on getting the food on my plate, then to the table, then eat. “This is actually kind of a feast for us too, haven’t had bread in a while,” he says, and we sit down at the table, side by side. I grin, and take a bite of the bread. I savor the taste, making a ‘yum’ sound. Carl laughs again, a beautiful laugh to be honest. I shrug my shoulders, and take another bite. He does, too, and we soon finish our plates. Carl takes my plate, and I smile, thanking him. This should be an interesting night.
