Chapter One;

I kick the door open with my foot, and let Jack lead into the small store. We'd just left the apartment, two small duffle bags as our luggage.
I follow him in, gun raised. it was a basic handgun from a cop; we found him wasting away just as most of the population was, and is.
"Clear," he says from the back of the store, and I lower the weapon, placing it back in it's holster. "You get food, I'll get more supplies of anything we need," Jack says, walking back towards me. I nod, heading towards the grocery section, him going to the tool area. Stuffing cans and other non-perishable foods into my bag, I hear a faint click, as if a door was opening. I set the bag down silently, turning my back against the wall and drawing my gun. I see the front door open, and immediately drop down to the ground, hearing soft footsteps, definitely not made by a biter. They get closer and closer, until they reveal a woman with short, dark brown hair. "Drop your weapon," I say, standing up to my full extent and point the gun straight at her. She looks surprised, and puts her hands up, gun in hand. "Whoa there, sweetheart," she says. "I'm only here for supplies, just as you are." I sigh, and lower the gun. "Name?" I ask, looking behind her to see a a guy around the same age as her, most likely Asian. "Maggie," she replies, a southern drawl laced in her voice. "This is Glenn. Do you have anybody else with you?" she asks sincerely, scanning the store. I nod. "My brother, Jack. Jack, get over here!" I say a bit louder than my usual voice, not wanting to attract any biters. He rushes over, gun in hand. When he sees the two, he steps in front of me. "Who are you?" he demands, and I sigh. "This is Maggie and Glenn, they just walked in for supplies," I say, stepping out from behind him. Glenn nods. "Are you two alone?" he asks, stepping forward to Maggie's side. "Yeah, we had a group..a herd got most of us," Jack replies, wrapping a protective arm around me. He was always protective of the family, him being 19, me 13. He had a twin, but at the age of eight, she died in a car crash. Ever since, I've kind of taken over that spot.
They both nod. Maggie gives Glenn a look, and he sighs, rubbing his face. "We have a group," he says, looking back at us. "It's safe, a prison, actually." My eyes light up in excitement. "Really?" I ask, grinning widely for the first time in a while. Maggie smiles, too. "Yeah, and we'd be more than happy to bring you two with us, if you want of course." I look up at Jack, and he's already looking down at me, nodding. "You're sure it's not too much trouble?" he asks. "Of course not. After we get more supplies, we'll take you right back," she says sweetly. I smile once again, and go back to loading up food, as so does Jack, while the two go find their own stuff.

After about an hour, we help load up their car. Jack and I sit in the back, the couple (they had told us after) in the front, with Glenn behind the wheel. The drive is about 45 minutes, filled with talk of the prison, and the people there. They had made up a council to keep everyone in line, Maggie and Glenn two of the members. "Rick is basically the leader, so he'll tell you where you'll sleep, and where to help out," Maggie explains, and I nod. "I never got your name by the way," she says, looking back at me. "Oh, right. I'm Abbie," I say, smiling. She nods, "nice to meet you, Abbie."
Once we arrive, I hop out, and grab my duffle bag, along with another one of Maggie's bags. 'Thank God I'll have at least a few girls to be around', I thought to myself as I followed Maggie, Glenn and Jack, doing their own thing.
Maggie leads me to Rick, and smile shyly. "Rick, this is Abbie. We found her on the run, along with her older brother, Jack." He sticks his hand out, smiling down at me. "Hi, Abbie," he says, and I shake his hand. "Nice to meet you, Rick," I reply, grinning. Maggie leaves us to help Jack and Glenn. "Here, sit," he says, guiding me towards a small table. He asks me questions, like 'how long have you two been on your own?' and 'were there any other survivors?'. I answer them quickly, my nerves of being with new people getting to me. "Well, that's great. You and your brother can have cell number 206, right next to mine and my son's," he says, guiding me to it. "Thank you," I say, before setting my bag on the top bunk. He smiles and walks out, Jack soon replacing him. "Welcome to our new home," I say, grinning.
