The boulder hurtled towards me at startling speeds. I only had a fraction of a second to get out of the way. I tried to move but I couldn’t. Instead of moving, I raised my hand towards the boulder and it stopped. I awoke with a start and a fall. I sat up, and began to think.
“What is happening to me?” I muttered softly. I looked at my bedside table; my clock was missing. I got off of my bed and began to look for my clock. It wasn’t under my bed so I set my hand on my table to stand up and felt the familiar curves of my clock. I looked at my hand startled. There was nothing there. I slid my hand up the digital screen and grabbed the clock. I pulled it off of the table that it was on and suddenly it appeared. I jumped and dropped in on my lap.
I passed my hand through the area that my clock was and my hand vanished as it passed through. I thought about the way that I woke up. I had been in a dream, in that dream I had stopped a boulder by putting my hand straight out. I hadn’t even touched the boulder it just stopped. Then I woke up and I landed on my bed...
“Wait.... I landed on my bed.” I thought, “If I landed on my bed... wouldn’t that mean that I had been in the air before I landed.” I must have been levitating.
At the thought of the word “levitating” I started to float softly into the air. I rose a couple of inches, and then stopped. I looked down, I was not touching anything. I tried standing, I stayed in the air.
“Ari?” a voice said concernedly, “Ari are you OK?”
“Yeah” I said. I set myself down right as the door to my room was opened.
“I heard a thump and thought that maybe you had fallen out of bed.” my mom said as she entered.
“Mom, I’m fine. I just discovered that I have supernatural powers.” I said to see what she would say.
“Supernatural powers, huh?” She said, “That’s cool!” her tone came off uninterested and she probably didn’t believe that I was telling the truth.
“You know what? I am going back to bed.” I said after looking at my clock. It was 2 in the morning. I sat down and pulled my covers over my thin but muscled female frame. My mom left, and I stood back up. I was too excited over my discovery to go back to bed.
I knew I could make myself float but could I make other items float? I pointed at my ramshackle skateboard that I had found on the street and willed it to rise into the air. It obeyed my command and rose to about eye-level. I set it back down, and thought about what had happened. I had powers that I probably didn’t quite understand. I thought that there must be a way to find someone who knew more about whatever it was that was affecting the way things reacted around me.
I sat down again and looked at the time. 2:10... 4 hours until my alarm would go off. I decided that I would try to go to sleep instead of sit on my bed and wait for morning. Right as my back hit the bed, my things began to fly to the center of the room of their own volition. I sat up confused; I didn’t will that to happen. After a moment of swirling, the motley of items formed the shape of a man wearing robes. Momentarily, the items magically transformed into a real man. I looked down at my tattered night gown and decided to cover myself. The man turned around and introduced himself as Mandrake the Seer. I just looked at him confused.
“You had better get dressed, Little Miss Warlock” Mandrake said, “We need to get you trained.”
“But what about my parents,” I asked, “Won’t they freak out?”
“I will cause them to forget about you for a while,” Mandrake said, “it is absolutely imperative that you complete your training and your first mission and fast.”
“My first mission?” I said, “And did you call me a “warlock?”
“Yes you are a warlock,” he said, “a young one and one that needs training, but you are a warlock. We also have a mission for you that only your hidden powers are strong enough to complete. So please get dressed and quickly.”
“Alright,” I sighed. I was a warlock. Well, at least now I knew what had happened to me. I didn’t move because he was still staring straight at me.
“Well get a move on.” he said insistently.
“Uh... You think you could turn your back for a moment?” I asked. I did not want to show him what I looked like almost naked.
“Oh... Uh... Sure...” he said turning red, “Sorry, I forgot that you don’t have any training, I thought that you had already figured out how to magically get dressed,” he finished as he turned around.
I stood up and began to get dressed. As I got dressed, I thought about what had happened. I found out that I was a warlock; I had magic blood in me. I could even control things without touching them.
I finished dressing and let Mandrake know that I was ready to go. He walked over to me and put his hand on my shoulder. Instantly everything but his hand blurred and began to shift.
