"You," he said, "Why? Why did you ever refuse me? Everything would be much better, if you had just said yes."
"Is that my husband you are keeping down there?" she asked, ignoring the question, "because it certainly sounds like him."
He was speechless for a moment, looking piteous. His face then hardened and he had dark flames in his eyes, "Your husband is down there, paying for all his wrongs, and you will be paying for yours soon enough." His voice was full of hatred and Evangeline felt truly scared for the first time that evening. She backed slowly away before hitting the wall and staying there.
"What happened to you? You are not the Jonathan I once knew. The Jonathan I knew was kind and gentle, but you, you turned bitter when your best friend fell in love with me. I had never even expressed my opinion on either of you before you grew bitter with jealousy. Why? Was it not my decision to make? I refused you because you were too angry and unstable, and I could never love a man who allows a woman to get between his friendships."
"What about Will, then? He didn't stay friends with me."
"You refused to let him come near you. You despised him. He never gave up on you. He still hasn't."
"Don't lie to me you little--" he broke off and composed himself, "you will come with me and you will do so quietly and like a good girl or I will break your pretty little arm, which would not be very pretty anymore for your real wedding day."
"Wha--" said Evangeline, startled.
"Hush and all will be revealed in time." He squeezed her arm painfully to remind her of his promise.
He dragged her down the stairs to the cellar. "My old friend. I'm back, as my prize has come so willingly into my territory. Also, she's in your clothes. You should keep more control over your wife," he said with spite. He tied Evangeline up near her husband and turned and left.
