"Margaret." I called. "Margaret I'm home."
I heard familiar footsteps running toward me, there was many of them, and I realized it was my precious son Nate.
"M-om-my." He called. Five years old and filled with so much beauty. I snatched him into my embrace and held him in the air before he could trip over his own beginner feet. I shook him back and forth playfully and laughed as he did so too.
I could hear his sweet smile and every previous incident in my sad world seemed irrelevant in this moment. Margaret leaned against the frame of the hallway. A satisfied smirk was glistening on her face as she watched my son and I. My eyes met hers in a thanking manner and I set Nate down.
Walking towards her; Margaret relaxed and stood up in a straight but calm manner. Insecure and powerful she stood and brought me towards her in a hug rubbing my back and sucking in her lips. This was how we exchanged "thank yous" and "your welcomes" to each other because, frankly, Margaret wasn't much of a talker- and neither was I.
"Hope you had fun! He wasn't too much trouble was he?"
Margaret let out a sincere sigh and fixed her gaze on the ground, a smile playing on her face. "Nah- no. He never is. Just a- little angel, he is. "
"I know.. Thank you- again."
"No problem." There was a moment pause as I watched Nate attempt to beckon the dog from it's hiding place under the couch. Then, Margaret brought her hands together her and rubbed anxiously. "Well, I best be going. Have a good night!"
I followed her out the door as the last words fell out of her mouth and her hand raised goodbye. "Later Nate-o" she sung.
"Byeee!" Nate waved back and I shut the door.
...
"Alright kiddo- time for bed."
Nate rolled his head back at me and pouted. "Why?"
I shrugged. "Sorry bud, but you need rest. Tomorrow we'll play a game or something."
"Maybe the record store?" He grinned. He's smart; real smart. I winked back at him as I snatched up his delicate hand and walked him to his bedroom.
I smiled once more as I set Nate down underneath his bed covers. He was already half asleep and still fighting to stay awake. "We'll see." I pulled the covers up and kissed his forehead. "Goodnight sweetheart."
"Goodnight mom."
Goodnight world.
...
"If you could see me. Who ever I am- it's not like the movies. It's not all skin in bones..."
I hummed softly while dancing around and along to the playful tune of my favorite band, FUN. I was desperately trying to make breakfast and still have fun before having to leave Nate for work. His father would be coming to pick him up.
I pushed away the thought of my son having to have that scum listed as parental guardian, but honestly; I guess I'm not much of a catch either. "Nate! Breakfast!"
Footsteps trailed closer and closer until my son sat at his seat on the table all dressed and ready. I served him with a smile and kissed him goodbye. "See you later baby. Have fun at school! Ill be there to pick you up."
"Okay mom." He chewed and waved goodbye.
...
