“Five shots of firewhiskey please!” I bark at the barman.
“That’s a lot for a little girl like you.” He responds, his breath reeks of alcohol and his teeth are rotten.
“I’ve had more.” I say, pushing 3 galleons over the counter.
He shrugs, takes the money and leaves to get my drinks.
Do you really want to start this again? My subconscious asks.
‘Yes’. I reply in my head.
Remember last time. She challenges.
I sigh, I do remember last time – she’s right, I shouldn’t start this again. I push the barstool back, it’s legs screeching against the stone floor. I make my way to the door.
“Your drinks Miss!” The bartender calls.
“Keep the money!” I yell and exit the bar, self-control surges through my body.
Outside the rain as stopped and the sun is starting to peak through the thick, grey clouds. I look up both ends of the street. If I turn left I will end up at the joke shop again, however if I turn right I can stop in at Flourish and Blotts and get some books for Healer training. Now that I no longer have a part-time job – not that it lasted longer than three minutes anyway – I can study full time and get my diploma earlier.
I start walking towards the book shop when someone familiar catches my eye. Adeline is across the street, talking quietly with a figure, whose face I cannot see. She looks likes she conversing deeply with this stranger. I try to read her lips but I can’t pick out any keywords. I slowly walk closer, turning my face so she doesn’t recognise me. What seems suspicious is that you need a wand to be able to get into Diagon Alley, and what would she want here anyway; she’s more a muggle than a witch.
“They’re planning to move him the night before his birthday, the Order want him out before he becomes of age.” Adeline whispers quickly, glancing around for anyone who may be listening in. I lean further back against the pillar of Gringotts.
“He’s starting to question your loyalty, you know what will happen if this information is wrong?” The voice replies gruffly, it sounds like Yaxley.
I see Adeline nod.
“Good. Make yourself believable. Is your boyfriend suspicious of anything?”
“Of course I make myself believable; they don’t even suspect that I am a full witch! And Fred? He’s too caught up with his ‘work’ to notice anything.”
The man laughs and pushes Adeline away, “now go before anyone sees you.”
“Yaxley wait, can you please make sure my brother is alright?”
So it is Yaxley. Adeline is consulting with a Death Eater? She’s Voldemort’s spy!
“He’s fine.” Yaxley replies before turning on the spot and disapparating.
Adeline pulls out a wand and taps the brick wall; leading to the muggle world, she disappears through it.
I let out the breath I didn’t know I was holding. Adeline has been lying to us after all this time? I never expected her to be the spy. She has a wand! How did she manage to convince us she had little magic? I glare at the brick wall, which had closed. The Order must know. The information that she gave Yaxley sounds like it was about Harry, and if Voldemort finds out anything about Harry then we would have no hope.
I break into a run, charging up the main street and towards the joke shop, only a minutes ago I had vowed not to return to.
“Fred!” I yell, barging through the door. The shop is crowded and I can’t see over the top of anyone’s heads. I push my way through people, mostly students, towards the back of the shop. George is serving at the counter, but he has no enthusiasm.
“Sorry, ‘scuse me, oops sorry.” I pass people, trying not to bump into them. George looks up and his eyes widen when he sees me.
“Where’s Fred?” I demand, a little too harshly. His smile drops and he points to the right wall of the shop. I see Fred standing on a ladder, handing a product to a little kid.
“Fred!” I call. He looks over his shoulder and a puzzled expression crosses onto his face.
“Do you have a minute? It’s really important.”
He nods and smiles to the little boy before making his way down the ladder and over to me.
“What’s up?”
“Not here.” I drag him by the arm into the back room where I have so many unhappy memories already.
“Adeline. She’s the spy.” I gasp through breaths.
“What spy?” Fred asks, confused.
“The spy I told you about last month. Voldemort told the Death Eaters that he had a spy in the Order. It’s Adeline.”
Fred frowns, “that’s absurd. Adeline would never spy, she’s pure-hearted, honest and completely on our side. Her parents were Death Eaters remember? She hates them.”
“You’re blinded by the fact that she’s your girlfriend. Fred she is a full witch! She has a wand! I just saw her in Diagon Alley.”
“Maia.” He places both hands on my shoulders. “I know you’re upset because of the whole thing with George, but you need to calm down, Adeline is good.”
“Upset? You think I’m making this up because I am upset, pissed off and angry with George? Forget I even came to you!” I storm past him and back down the stairs.
“Maia?” George grabs my arm as I am leaving the shop, “I’m sorry again. Please what’s wrong?” He pleads.
“You and your brother are just alike!” I growl pulling my arm out of his hand.
“We’re twins.” He replies, cracking a grin.
I roll my eyes and exit the shop; I spin on the spot and apparate to Remus’s house.
