On The Road

Kasey gave me a weird look as we pulled up to my house followed by the rest of the group. Kasey always was amazed by the size of my house. It could sleep more than a football team.
It was only Kasey, Mr. D, and I to enter my house since there were so many people now. As soon as we entered the house, we could hear my parents arguing. We followed their voices until we found them in their office.
They were still arguing when we entered, so I cleared my throat. They both spun around to me and my mother gasped, "Sweetie, you're ok!"
They smothered me with hugs, and then we explained what was going on. My parents gladly agreed to come along and help. I went to my room as they packed their medical supplies. Mr. D helped them pack as Kasey helped me.
I grabbed my big, black suitcase and began throwing shirts I could use, not anything fancy. After all of my clothes was packed, I grabbed my scrapbooks and a few novels.
I found Kasey studying a group picture of all of our friend. "Bring it," I told him. He tucked the frame under his arm and grabbed my suitcase.
We got into my vehicle and waited for my parents to finish loading their car, a brand new Mustang in canary yellow. They loved too dollar things, hence the house and the car. That was just my parents, always going all out. The probably packed their best clothes.
Don't get me wrong, I love my parents, but they tended to be more on the  snobby side. They always spoiled me, which ashames me to admit. I never adopted their idea of flaunting our money. The idea made me feel dirty and too snobby.
We left my driveway and drove a few moments until we came to a trailer park. We all parked and Mr. D signaled for us to wait a moment. Seconds after he left his car and entered the old beat up trailer, he ran out with a carry on bag and a satchel. He threw them into his backseat and then took the lead as we  followed him. Our next destination would be the lab.
We had decided on stopping the least amount of times possible, and if someone needed to stop, they just needed to put on their emergency blinkers. The rest of the group would follow suit and stop at the nearest gas station.
Not even an hour in, we had to stop. Everyone grabbed a bunch of snacks while we were there, maybe to hold off another stop for a while. After paying for the food, we hopped back the the cars and continued our journey. Only a few infected wandered the roads. The disease was too widely spread.
Another few hours passed and Kasey fell into an unpeaceful sleep, leaving me to listen to the alerts on the radio alone. He tossed and turned constantly and mumbles incoherent words.
Kasey's eyes flew open as he sat up.  "Bad dream?" I questioned. He nodded confirming my theory.

"Look at that one!" Kasey pointed to an infected chasing the cars in front of me, but it stayed on the side of the road. It fell back quickly and began chasing my car. I let out a giggle, but then quickly stopped as I realized how sick that was. Laughing at an infected person, wow, Amber. "I feel bad for the things. They were once human," I confessed and turned my attention back to the road.
"Yeah, me, too. They aren't people anymore, though," Kasey stated. I nodded my head, even though my heart sank at the thought of what it would be like to be one of them. It would be absolutely terrible, who even knew if they had thoughts, or feelings, or anything. I never want to end up like that.
"I bet that ones was a jerk before he turned," Kasey showed me an infected that had on a white, stained with more than just blood and dirt, muscle shirt. The prominent beer belly was accentuated with stains. It limped alongside the cars, not even trying to follow us.
"Maybe, but we shouldn't say that. He could've been a great person," my voice broke. I was really getting worked up over nothing, but I have an excuse. I've been through a lot in a day.
"Ambear," I smiled at the nickname, even though it was really cheesy, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you upset." Kasey put his hand on my shoulder.
"No. No, it's fine. I'm just being emotional."
"Bear, everything things going to be alright, I promise," I glanced at Kasey and gave him a grateful look. Then I raised my hand with only my pinky up.
"Pinky promise?" I asked innocently and waited for him to join pinkies with me.
"Pinky promise," he confirmed as he wrapped his pinky around mine. I moved my pinky and held his hand instead. He squeezed my hand in return.

Kasey had taken over driving so that I could take a nap, but sleep wouldn't be found by me. My brain was distracted at the increasing amount of infected that appeared as we got closer to the lab. The only people I'd seen in miles were the ones from our group.
"Do you think there is anyone left?" My question hung in the air. My whole body hoped there were people not infected by the disease, except the view had me doubting there were people still normal.
"There maybe some in hiding, or maybe at the lab," Kasey tried lifting my spirits, but it wasn't too convincing. I don't even think he belied his own words.
We turned down a gravel road. Most of the roads were blocked by cars that had run out of gas a long time ago, so Mr. D led us down many back roads. Dirt floated in the air, obscuring  the view of everything, except the tail lights of my parents' car in front of us.
A thud sounded out and the car jumped a little D we ran over something. I quickly turned in my seat and looked behind us. I saw the a figure of something struggling to get up, an infected.
"Dude! You just ran over an infected!" I laughed a little, even though it was terrible of me. He let out a small laugh, too.
"It shouldn't have been on the road," Kasey joked.
"Pedestrians have the right of way," I stated as the road smoothed out and the smoke cleared. The gravel turned into asphalt. We only had about two more hours until we arrived at the lab. The groups of infected were growing thicker and thicker as we made our way to the lab. If the population kept growing like this, we were going to have a lot of problems there. We probably wouldn't even be able to get close and we'd have to fight our way in.
We stopped one more time for gas at an abandoned gas station, careful to watch out for any infected, and then continued our journey started to the lab again.
