"I think the lab may be a little overrun.." Kasey stated as we pulled close to the lab. About thirty I decree tightly gathered around the large building. It was done shaped with only windows at the top.
Groaning and moaning, the infected ran into each other as they tried to get into the building. They were mainly gathered around a small red flashing light.
"They're attracted to light and sound. Great," I sarcastically pointed out.
Kasey stared at the infected as Mr. D led us to the back of the lab. The noise of the vehicles attracted some of the infected.
The back of the lab had a smaller amount of infected, but once they saw us, they got excited. They groaned louder and ran into the cars.
There was a large garage door that was attached to the building. We patiently waited for the door to open. A tiny camera turned to us, focused on Mr. D's car and then the door opened.
We all drove in quickly to avoid too many infected getting in. I rolled down my window and whistled as the garage door closed. The infected piled against my door.
"What are you doing?" Kasey asked. He cowered against his door until he heard the bounding on the glass.
I took a pair of scissors and stabbed each other infected that waited in the unorganized line. I was careful not to let my wrist get too close to their mouths or hands.
Kasey and the others caught on to my method and did the same thing as me. Once all the infected were dead, I had to force my door open due to the pile of dead infected. My face crinkled as I looked down at the pile. I had to jump over the bodies in order to avoid them.
A door creaked and I spun around, "Daniel?" A small women with gray hair and a white lab coat stood at the propped open door.
"Yes, its me," Mr. D confirmed and then pleaded, "Please let us in."
The lady stepped to the side and motioned for us to enter. I quickly grabbed my bag from the back. We all slipped inside the door.
I was covered in grit, sweat, and a desk liquid which I'm assuming was from the infected. It felt disgusting, but I wanted to know what was going on before I went change. The lady guided guided us through a bunch of hallways until she stopped in front of a door,"In there are showers, I'll come back in a few minutes."
We entered the room where we were meet with rows of stalls, some showers while others were toilets. A rack of towels was right by the door, so we all grabbed some and went to the shower stalls.
I threw my two towels over the door so that it would be off the floor. Inside of the shower, they had shampoo, conditioner, soap, and all the other necessities. I turned the knobs until the water felt right and the I started washing my hair. After all the soap was out of, I could hear some thing being thrown against my door. It was clothes since we left our bags in the cars. I finished my shower , dried myself off, and wrapped a towel around my hair.
The clothes were a little big and the shirt hung off my shoulder, but I wasn't complaining because they were comfortable. I waited on the benches outside of the bathrooms while the rest of my family and friends were still showering.
Before anyone else got out of the showers, the lady came to me. I noticed how she wore a crisp suit and walked with confidence. She stopped by me and reached out her hand, "I'm Tara, one of Daniel's old coworkers."
"I'm Amber. Do you know a lot about the infected?" My question was straight to the point.
"A lot of us here call them biters," she told me, "but we have been trying to find a cure or something to keep the disease at bay. We haven't had much luck."
"There are more people here? I didn't see any in the towns as we passed through them," I stated.
"There's not that many of us left outside of the lab. We took a bunch of people when the outbreak started," Mrs. Tara told me and pointed down the hall, "That's the reason we have so many halls and rooms, just invade something like this would happen."
Kasey walked out of the bathroom shaking his head like a dog. My hair was also wet , but I didn't mind it.
"I'm Tara," The lady introduced herself to Kasey and stuck out her hand.
"Kasey," he shook her hand and then motioned for us to follow her. She lead us through many halls covered with doors, which I assumed was the dorm rooms, until we got to the end of a hall. A door which was painted in a bright orange warning to stay out unless you were authorized personnel stood at the end of the hall.
Mrs. Tara pushed the doors open and let us go in first. She took the front again and unlocked the door on the left with a key she had on a necklace.
The room was filled with science equipment. Some scientists were using microscopes and other were working on other projects. A sound caught my attention and sent me on high alert: an animalistic groan.
"Is that an infected?" I nervously asked as I followed the sound to the back of the room.
Behind a large filing cabinet, hidden from view, was a large metal cage. Right when I walked in front of the enclosure, the groans got louder. They had an infected inside of a cage in the lab. I got close to the cage; my hands were almost touching he metal bars, but then Mrs. Tara spoke.
"Be careful, that's nibbles. He likes to bite. That's actually one of the ways it travels, the disease I mean, through bites or cuts."
I nodded and decided it was best to back up a few feet, "How long had he been in here? How did you catch it?"
She let out a small laugh and then responded, "We've been having Nibbles for a few months. We had to use a really long pole with a rope at the end to get him in here."
Kasey stood beside me and studied the creature, "Do you guys study him?"
"Oh, yes. It's the only reason we have him," Mrs. Tara opened a small insulated box on the side of the cage. She pulled out a piece of meat with a long toothpick in it. As soon as the meat got into the cage, Nibbles quickly snatched it in his mouth.
Mrs. Tara showed us around the lab and introduced us to some of the other scientists. As we had a tour of the lab, she commented about what they learned from Nibbles, which wasn't much. The infected only ate meat and preferred fresh. The scientists mostly used pieces of rats the caught, but they were running low on that.
The infected were attracted more to sound than light. Mrs. Tara said that Nibbles would sometimes get rowdy when people were talking. She said he wants to find the sound and eat the people. The infected weren't really people anymore, just some messed up animals. None of their organs worked besides the animalistic part of their brain that everyone has and their stomachs.
She finished showing us around the lab and then we found my parents and friends in the huge living room. Mrs. Tara introduced herself to the rest of the group and then gave us room numbers. It was two people per room. My parents, of course, would be rooming together. I paired with Harley and the rest of the group paired up. Mr. D was separated from our rooms. His was closer to the lab.
My parents offered to help with anything, especially science things. I wanted to offer my help, but I don't think they would've allowed a girl still in high school to help. I would love to do anything for them, by I would have to wait.
Most of the people in the living room looked friendly and even a few came up and introduced themselves. A few kids my age stayed in a small group in front of the tv. It was mostly girls, but they looked to be the type who were rude, so I stayed to myself. I could see a few guys checking out my friends as Zack stood by my side with his arm possessively around my waist. I rolled my eyes at Zack, but told the group what Kasey and I learned about the infected. I left out the part about Nibbles though.
Dinner time rolled around and everyone, which was about 40 people, waited in line for food in the kitchen area. Most of the food was canned, although I was not complaining. It was good. Em and Ann made faces as they saw the food, but I nudged them. They sighed, but threw on fake smiles as we found an empty table.
"This is actually pretty good!" I stuffed my mouth with the canned beans. Ann and Em hesitantly took bites, but then nodded their heads at my previous statement.
