“What, what’s happening?!” she shouts.
“SHHHHH!” I tell her coming in and whipping away my tears. “The last thing we want is doctors and nurses pocking their noses into our lives” I whisper.
“But they’re the only people who can help her” she says and starts to cry again.
“Willow, come on think, she’s a vampire she has no pulse.”
“Well what is it then”
I grab my bag from under the bed, the bags we all packed before came here. I plonk it on the edge of the bed.
“It’s just the pen; I did say it will only last for a few days. I thought we would be out of here by now, well we would of if Storm wasn’t…” I trail of at the end. “You know..” I say frantically rooting through the bag.
“Wait, does that mean mine has run out to?” she asks towering over the bed were storm lye’s.
“I suppose so yes.” It isn’t in the bag. I zip it up and shove it back under the bed. I pull another bag from under the bed.
“It’s the stupid bags, you can never tell them apart as there all the same” I say frustrated.
I start rooting through the other frantically. Clothes, torches, rope, blankets.
“Let’s just pray that there is another one, well two, for you as technically you’re still under the radar of the doctors as they haven’t really said or checked you out.”
Matches, a water bottle, a bag full of packet things.
“What! You mean you don’t know if you have any of the pen thingy’s left!” Willow shouts.
“Calm down! And it’s not a ‘pen thingy’ its like an adrenaline pen, but a lot lot stronger and for people who don’t have a pulse or a heartbeat.”
Paper, pens. A black box!
“Yes!” I cry. I open the box, hands shaking. I stop and stare.
“What, what!” Willow says siting up.
“There is only one left…” I say still looking at the box, and as if staring at it another one is going too miraculously appear.
“Use is on Storm we have no choice.”
“ok, I just need to set It up as there is only two pens and I used them both on you two.”
My hands are still shaking. I open the pen up, take the empty tube out; almost dropping it (it’s not much pressure having the fate of someone’s life or potensually death in your hands). I take the new tube with the liquid in it, slot it in and put the pen back together. I sigh with relief. I put the box down. Willow is biting her thumb while holding Storms hand tight.
“You ready?” I don’t wait for her to answer, I lift it up and-
“Stop!” Willow says. “If we were conscious and you jabbed us with it and were unconscious for two days, Storm is Coma, we don’t know if she is even going to wake up!” Her voice goes wobbly and tears fill her eyes.
“And what’s the point to this,” I hurry her.
She takes a deep breath. “How do we know that this isn’t going to make her not wake up at all, as the side effects are unconsciousness? It might just push further away…”
I sigh and sit down as I know she could be right. I put the pen down and take Storms hand and I stroke it with my thumb.
“Hi Strom, I haven’t spoken to you yet, sorry. What do we do, Storm? What do we do?”
I sigh again and tears fill my eyes. She lies still.
“Can you hear us? Just do something to know you can hear us. Squeeze my hand; just squeeze my hand, please.”
We sit in silence, waiting, waiting for her to actually do it, even though we know damn well that she won’t. Willow takes her hand away from Storms.
“What’s the point in this?” Willow whispers and curls up on the seat.
“Please Storm, what do we do?”
I hold her hand. Her cold pale skin wrapped around my hand. I wait and don’t feel anything.
“Don’t give up.” I tell Willow.
I feel something press on my hand. I look down its Storms finger moving.
“Storm, Storm, oh my gosh!”
Willow gets up and sits next to her holding her hand tight.
“Were here Storm, we love you remember that.” Willow says crying.
I feel like a huge weight has been lifted that there is hope left for her for us all.
Storm slowly turns her head to me.
“Careful,” I say to her, but I crouch down so I’m face to face with her. I’m so glad just to see those green eyes of hers, but it does bring out her very pale skin.
“D-d-do it-t” she breaths. I only just make out what she’s saying. She looks at the pen on the chair and then looks at me. A tear rolls down my cheek. I know what she means.
“I don’t want to lose you again.” I cry quietly, as I stroke her hair.
She’s too exhausted to say anything, but she nods at me. Willow doesn’t say a word but starts to cry harder and kisses her hand to say I love you and well goodbye, as she will be unconscious. I get up slowly, my body shaking. How much I don’t want to do it to lose her. How nice it was to see her eyes open and hear her voice. I take the pen in one hand, and takes Storms hand in the other. We all know that this is what we have to do to protect her from the world around her.
“We love you” I try to say. Storm squeezes my hand very softly. Willow looks away as she cannot bare it. I take a deep breath and close my eyes.
I cry and push the pen into her arm. I feel horrible and I feel Storms hand slowly loose its grip on mine. I stare at her as she drifts away. I drop the pen and drop to my knees. We just sit at her side and cry.
After a couple of seconds we hear the slow beep of the monitor again. I can’t help but smile slightly and I know Willow does the same.
After a while I say into the silence. “At least we have protected her for now, and that she is alright.”
“Yeah, and that maybe she will come back, again.”
We both laugh and sniff a bit and whip away our tears.
