I opened my jacket and held the kitten out next to the heater where it could stay warm as I removed my boots. It curled up, curiously gazing around as I took my jacket off as well. My mother came from the kitchen and greeted me with a warm smile. "Toby. If you stay outside too long you will get frostbite!" She pinched my frosty cheeks and pulled me into a warm embrace. I didn't feel cold anymore as I hugged her back. The scent of mint stuck on her clothes as always, it was strong. I didn't know if it was her perfume or just a natural smell she had but it was refreshing and made me feel at home. She let me go and noticed the kitten warming up to the heater. "Who is this?" My mother always had a soft spot for small animals. "I just found him in the woods." I watched as she picked the kitten up carefully. "It's a he?" I realized the assumption I had made and checked to see if it was correct. "It's a boy" I stated looking back at my mother as the kitten shifted in her arms uncomfortably.
We spoke very fluent English but sometimes my mother's words would slip. "Liebchen, Liebchen~" She held the kitten happily in her hands as it wriggled in her gentle grasp. I laughed at the sight and went into the kitchen to sit down at the table. The kitchen was somewhere I spent the most time with my mother. We would bake things together like cookies and pies. Baking was something I enjoyed doing even if I was a boy. Mother always said that the most important part of a person was the inside. Being littler I always thought of that in a practical way. Without your heart you can't live! Your heart is most important mother, take good care of it. She didn't mean that though, her words had a different meaning to them that I couldn't understand as a child. I still don't understand them today.
The kitten abruptly interrupted my thoughts with a whack to the face. I looked at him dumbfounded for a bit and then patted him back gently. "No, no, no, not on the table baby cat!" My mother looked at me sternly as I removed him from the table top. He sat at the legs of my chair staring at me with his wide brown eyes. I turned back to my mother at the opposite end of the table. She had set down a hot bowl of soup in front of me. I could see the steam rising from the surface, it felt like it was burning my face.
"Toby you don't have to wear that inside.." My mother looked at me with a sympathized expression. I forgot about it again.. "I'm just so used to wearing it." I took off the patch that was used to cover my right eye. People in the village always thought I had been cursed since I was born so we decided to hide it. The kids at school would even bully me about it but now they tend to leave me alone. It's a blessing! Mother would say that to me when I felt discouraged. It made me a little better after hearing that each time. Being different is what makes you who you are Toby! Don't ever change my beloved baby boy. This is why I love mother. She makes me feel special and loved.
A little delight creeped into the corners of my mouth as I gave a genuine smile.
