Louis
“Quick, quick!”
“I'm going as fast as I can!”
“Sshh! Keep your voice down!”
My eyes peered open wearily from the hushed whispers outside of our tent. As my sight adjusted to the darkness, I realized Leila was still in my embrace, cuddling my arm. I smiled softly but then my attention turned back to the voices outside. I immediately recognized them belonging to Helen and Rob. Reluctant to wake Leila, I carefully unwrapped my arms from her and crawled away. I exhaled with relief at my success to keep her undisturbed. I stumbled out of the tent to see Rob and Helen carrying bags filled with supplies and heading to our Jeep. It was still dark and from what I could tell, I don't believe they noticed my presence. I hurried back into the tent and retrieved the gun that was under Leila's pillow before stepping out into the night once more. I extended my arms and held the gun out, standing my ground.
“Halt,” I ordered in my best attempt to seem intimidating. They froze and turned around. Rob smiled almost jeeringly at me – not the reaction I was hoping for.
“What do you want, little boy?” he ridiculed.
“What are you doing?”
“I told you to keep your voice down,” Helen hissed to Rob, both of them ignoring my question.
“What are you doing?” I repeated more urgently. “What are you doing with our supplies?”
“The girl seems to know what she's doing, she can get some more”.
Realization hit me like a ton of bricks. “You're stealing our supplies?”
Rob clapped slowly, “Smart lad”.
“Why? I thought we were your friends!”
“Oh, Louis,” Helen's voice was sympathetic yet taunting, “Sweet, ignorant Louis. We were never friends. We said a few meaningless nothings, shared a few stories. You were just deluded enough to trust us, silly boy”.
“I won't let you get away with this,” my voice wavered more than I intended.
“What are you gonna do, lad? Shoot us? Go ahead. I'll make it easy for you”. Rob stood motionless as my finger brushed the trigger. I felt my hands begin to shake, and it was at that moment I knew I couldn't do it. I sighed and shook my head, lowering my gun. I heard it thud to the floor as it slipped from my weak grasp.
“I can't do it. I can't shoot you”.
“Ah, well that's a shame. 'Cos I could easily shoot you,” he sneered. He stormed towards me and I felt a bead of sweat trickle down my forehead when I noticed he had a pistol in his hand. Before I could react, he grabbed hold of my shoulder and held the gun up to my head. I held my breath and squeezed my eyes shut, awaiting the crack of the gun.
A few seconds passed of eerie silence, before I dared to peek one eye open to see him grinning at me. I frowned in confusion at his seemingly amused expression.
“Stripes?”
All our heads snapped in the direction of the tent to where Leila was calling from. Rob pressed the gun harder into my temple. “Answer her”.
“Y-yes?!” I called back.
“What are you doing out there? It's still dark. Are you alright?”
“Tell her you heard a Target”.
“I, um, I thought I heard a Breather but there isn't one”.
