Percy Jackson watched as the students went by, completely unaware of anything around them. It reminded him of his old life, before he was abandoned and banished. Before the insanity ruled Percy's mind. Before he was cursed with blood lust and the ability to see ghosts. Before he could read body language and the languages of the world. Before Percy was forced to walk the world forever. Before Percy was given an outside to match the inside. Before Percy's life changed.
But this wasn't New York; this was a small town in Florida. This wasn't Goode High; this was River View High School, home of the cranes.
The school was separated into different buildings, leaving the students to travel from building to building through wide halls in the sun. The green roofs glinted in the sunlight, reminding Percy that this wasn't his school. He didn't have one. His was taken from him. Taken from him by those he once considered family.
The students looked at him curiously, wondering why he was just standing there and why he was dressed like that. A worn hoodie with small silver spikes on the shoulders. Jeans that had seen better days, sneakers that were black and Velcro. He had arm guards and the t-shirt under his jacket was a dark gray. His eyes glinted in the sunlight; one dark black, the other a warm and soft orange that seemed to glow like an ember.
Weirdly enough, the mortals saw this. The other students stared and gawked, wondering how his eye glowed and was orange. What they didn't see was Percy's true appearance. That was reserved for those who deserved it.
What they did see, was a tall boy around nineteen with tan skin, jet black hair, full lips, and strong looking muscles. He was six five and his smile was small. What they saw was a man who had given up on the world. And he knew just how to fix it. What they saw was a guy who had given up on humanity only to clutch to it like a baby to it's blanket.
The bell rang and Percy followed the rest of the students into the school campus. Everyone here wore a uniform of a green t-shirt and jeans, so Percy stood out like a sore thumb with his hood on. But he wasn't about to take it off.
Percy went to the building that said 'Front Office' on the side and entered through a set of double doors. The main room was a wide hall with an equally wide desk in the middle with two other hallways on either side. Two people sat on the other side of the desk, writing things on a paper Percy couldn't see. The walls were painted with the school colors of green and white and there were chairs lining the walls.
Seeing as no one was in front of the desk, Percy walked up to it and waited. It was close to thirteen seconds before the lady Percy was in front of noticed that someone was standing over her. She looked at him distastefully and asked, "Can I help you."
"I'm new." It was a bland sentence without any emotion but the woman- who couldn't have been more than twenty three- couldn't help but pay attention to the man. "I need my schedule."
"Mr. Jackson, yes?" The woman asked. Percy numbly nodded his head, accepting Sally's name. It wasn't like he was going to go by anything else; it just didn't have the same ring to it. Percy O'Brian... Percy Stevens... Percy Hancock... Nope, just didn't work.
"Here you go," she said as she handed a slip of paper to the unusual man. He looked at least nineteen, why would he be going to high school? Percy took the paper and read the schedule. First period was English, second was World History, third was Drawing(Art), fourth was Physics, then it was lunch, fifth was Gym, sixth was Calculus, and seventh was Creative Writing.
"Thanks," Percy said as he went to his first class. English Four with Ms. Daniels. It was in the second building, close to the entrance of the school. Each building was the same. Each building was a narrow corridor with lockers on the side and two, four, or six classes on each side. The only difference was the length of each building.
Percy looked for his class, number two-o-four and when he found it, he knocked. It took a few seconds but the door was pushed open by a girl with long brown hair, a yellow and black spots jacket, black short shorts, sneakers, and pale brown eyes. Her eyes met his and everything froze. She did, Percy did, and it seemed like the very air between them froze. He knew at once... she could see him. Really see him. The real him. His true appearance. The appearance of a dead man.
Percy was the first to unfreeze and he pushed past her and into the classroom, leaving her stunned. He handed Ms. Daniels his schedule and took a seat behind an empty chair. Which belonged to the girl that had opened the door. She didn't look at him as she sat down but instead looked straight ahead.
Ms. Daniels then started the class by welcoming the new students to another year, or in Percy's case, welcoming to nowhere.
