[ wc : 1507 ]Society talks when they want something. And I wanted nothing. People thought I was just a mute. But in a loud mind like mine, I was often quiet and kept to my ideas.
Oral reports were not my forte. Over the years I learned that if you keep your mouth shut, you stay safe. But not in this case.
So apparently requiring to talk is needed in the American School Society, or as I like to call it ASS. I had to do an oral report in english but as I hated to speak, I didn't. That resulted to me being in Mr. Vernon's office with him yelling at me to speak.
"I'm sick and tired of your attitude. Open your goddamn mouth!" I still refused to speak. "If you don't speak I'll give you detention." I still didn't speak, afraid I was going to make things worse. "A weeks worth of detention." Silence. "Fine. Saturday detention for your lack of cooperation." I just nodded. "Get out of my office." I grabbed my bag and left.
Saturday finally came, much to my disappointment. I was hoping the world would end before the day came.
I walked to the empty school. Detention was to be held in the library. I spent most of my time there. Walking in there were four others. I didn't really know them so I just made my way to my regular seat in the back. Thankfully no one had taken it.
Soon another came in. He was very loud, knocking things over, and pocketing little objects. He sat down in the desk in front of me. I wasn't planning on participating or paying attention at all today.
When Vernon came in I did was I usual do when he's talking, ignore him. I started doodling in my notebook when someone snapped their fingers in my face.
"Hey!" I looked up to see John Bender. Everyone knew him because of his criminal ways. "Oh, its you." He said disappointed. Who was he expecting? "You're the one who can't talk." I just shrugged. I was perfectly able to talk, I just chose not to. "Well you get boring fast." He said and he went to go pick on some one else.
Vernon soon came back in yelling. Thankfully not at me, in the beginning. Apparently a screw fell out of the door? I don't know but he was asking what happened and when I couldn't give him, and answer he was furious.
"Just talk dammit! It's a yes or no question!" I cowered back as he towered above me yelling. He raised his hand and automatically my arms went up to shield my face. My legs went up to my chest to make myself as small as possible.
"Whatever." He murmured as he lowered his hand and went back to the front.I was still processing what was happening and didn't hear what he was saying.
When Vernon left I started writing in my notebook. My notebook was my personal escape. I could doodle and write and keep everything in there. And no one would want to read it because no one really cares what I do.
As I finished the last sentence of the poem the notebook was ripped away from me.
"Hey!" I shouted. I gasped and covered my mouth. Everyone was staring in my direction wide eyed and open mouthed.
"So she speaks!" Bender announced. "This book must be really important to you if your gonna talk for it." He opened it. "Let's see here."
