Lillie's POV

"Are you sure you don't want to wear a jacket?" Mooney asked walking me down the stairs from my room. "I don't need one." I stated quickening my pace so that I would be the first off of the stairs. "It's cold out." Rolling my eyes I stopped at the end of the stairs waiting for her.

"And if I get cold, you can say that you told me so. Now can we go please." I asked, gesturing to the door. She nodded grabbing my hand and pulling me through the crowd of tables. Mr. Falcone was right business is very low. There only seemed to be about ten people in the building.

"Where do you wanna go first when we get there?" Mooney asked stopping on the curb hailing over a cabby. "Well I like the clowns and the acrobats can we see them first?" I asked as the old, rusted cab stopped in front of Mooney and I. "Course dear, now get in."

                                                                                         ,.,.,.,.,.,.,

I have never been to a circus, I never really knew what they would be like. I would only see them in cartoons or when I was a kid people in the institution would talk to me about their fondest memory. Some of them where watching the acrobats glide through the air, others liked the mockery of the clowns.

Haly's Circus is probably the brightest place in Gotham at this time of the year. I like all the colors, just looking at them can brighten any person.  The circus was full of people all different but they all had one thing in common. They all had the widest smiles I had ever seen. I believe there is nothing better than a smile.

"Clowns or acrobats first?" Mooney asked munching on the popcorn she just bought. "Clowns." I said jumping up and down, grabbing her hand and dragging her to the tent. A man with a red frown and blue took our tickets before letting us in.

"Aren't clowns supposed to have those creepy smiles?" Mooney asked taking a seat in the middle row. "Yeah." I said sitting beside her as more people swarmed into the tent. "Great.." She mumbled. "Do clowns creep you out?" I asked smirking up at her. "No that would be dumb." She said throwing a piece of popcorn at me.

"Whatever you say.." I sang as the lights slowly went down signally the show was about to start. The clowns had came into the middle of the tent in a bright neon car honking the horn madly and that's where the clown madness started.

There had been cream pies flying, false flowers that had been full of water. They told cheesy jokes that seemed to actually impress people and other clowns made horrible reenactments of what the acrobats would do. The clowns seemed very clumsy, I guess that makes them funnier.

"They weren't that bad." I said after we left the tent. "No but it was a waste of a ticket." Mooney stated throwing out her now empty popcorn bag. "Well I chose first. You can choose the next." I said with a small smile as we walked down the path of circus tents.

"How about the snake dancer?" She asked as we came up to a smaller tent. "Sure.." I said. I never really heard about a snake dancer, sounds dangerous. I like that. The line wasn't as long for the clowns which was nice but it still seemed to move slow because of the boy at the ticket booth.

"Enjoy the show.. enjoy the show.." That's all he said as he slowly picked off the ticket stubs. He is the first person I have seen here who actually looked like they hated the circus. But with the closer we got, I could slowly see why.

The boy had a swollen eye that was tinted a light shade of purple and his top lip was busted. What happened to the poor boy. His eyes kind of just looked lifeless. Finally it was our turn. Handing the boy our tickets I gave him a smile but he didn't even look up.

"Lets sit in the front.." Mooney said holding my hand and taking me through the sea of people. "You like the snake dancer or something?" I asked sitting beside her on the rickety bench. "They are very majestic." I nodded with a smirk playing with the ticket stub. "Right.." I mumbled.

It seemed like it was minutes into the dance when really it had been only a few seconds. The show wasn't very exciting but everyone else seemed to be enjoying it. "Fish.. I think I'm gonna go find a bathroom." I said before getting up and exiting the tent.

"Didn't enjoy the show?" I heard a voice ask from behind me once I finally escaped from the tent. I turned to see the ticket boy still seated behind his booth. "I enjoyed it about as much as you enjoy taking tickets." I said with a grin. "So you enjoyed the show?" He asked with a smirk. "Totally. It was so great I had to leave early."

"I'd give you a ticket refund but I can't do that.." He said looking at the ticket bucket. "That's fine." I said leaning on the booth. "I'm Lillie Patil and you are?" I asked holding out my hand. "Jerome Valeska.." He said shaking my hand slowly. "Was that your mom in there?" I asked taking my hand back from him.

"Sadly." He said, there was something different in his voice at the mention of his mother. "You wanna go on a walk? It probably isn't fun sitting out here all alone." He looked around before hopping out of his seat behind the booth, "Sure."

"So what's it like? Living with a circus." He shrugged stuffing his hands into his jacket pockets. "Its crazy, living with so many people, always moving. What's it like living in Gotham?" I shrugged looking around the circus feeling his eyes on me. "I don't know really. I just got here." "From where?"

"Little town in Oregon.. it wasn't anything special.. what happened to your face?" I asked, stopping to take a seat on an old bench. "What's it matter to you?" He asked a little angry. "Well it looks like it hurts.. I got hurt like that to when I was younger." I smiled at him patting his shoulder "What happened?"

"My mother, she got upset with me because I wouldn't do the dishes. " I rolled my eyes scoffing. "What a bitch. Did you do anything? To like you know get even?" He looked at me like I was crazy. "No. I couldn't do that."

"Yeah you can.  Its easy. What's it matter anyways? She hurt you why not even out the playing field." He shrugged playing with his jacket. "Being weak will get you no where..  but its your choice.."

Slowly people started to exit the tents, soon the entire path would be flooded with people. "Well, it was nice to meet you Jerome. See ya around." I said giving him a quick peck on the cheek. "Yeah.. see ya." I gave one last smile before I ran off to find Mooney.

"Where have you been? You missed the entire show." I shrugged following Mooney to the next tent. "I got lost but that's alright."
