What we want to see in the first chapter:
Good grammar; please make sure your first chapter is well edited so we have a good time reading it.
Interesting; It's the FIRST CHAPTER. Make it interesting! We want to want to read on.
NO info dump; don't bombard us with information as soon as we step into your story. It's unwelcoming. :(
Information from the pros. Kinda pros?
There are many, many ways to start a story. No singular way is right, you can do this a million ways. There are tonnes of ways you can do it wrong, though. The best way to make your story interesting from the get go is to start with action! Something that was shock or excite the readers. Not the cliche thing of "My name is ____ and I am __ years old. I live..." Who cares about that stuff until they've formed an attachment to the story? No one. Give us a reason to want to know this about your character!
So good luck! You've got about a week or less to make sure your first chapters are ready before we start judging them.
