Grace’s POV written by JabberJaws
Today, the second of September is my birthday I thought as I lay in my bed inside of the Hades cabin. My step-brother Nico was climbing down to the bottom of our bunk bed, because he slept on the top. His dark brown hair was messy, sticking out in different directions making me smile.
When he reached ground level he gave me a big grin yelling in our big dark cabin, “Happy Birthday Grace!” Those words echoed through are cabin making me grin myself. He was like a real brother to me- no step-brother, real brother. I climbed out of my bed, in my favorite pink and black checkered pajama bottoms and black tank top. Today I was turning sixteen. My medium length slightly curled brown hair lay in a loose ponytail draped over my left shoulder.
Nico’s eyes widened suspicious of me being so quite because I, Grace Starr Scott am not a quite person. I had a plan. Nico glanced nervously around and I found it hard to keep my laughter in as he did so, me standing calmly in front of my bed.
Suddenly, as he turned his head to the right, his floppy brown hair swaying slightly to the side and I ran like a bull straight at him laughing hard. I had my arms outstretched ready to clobber the boy with a hug when we bumped into each other.
“Roar!” I screamed dramatically when I reached him, both of us grinning ear to ear. I clobbered him in a hug and we laughed, me pulling him down onto the floor. “Thank you,” I laughed out and he laughed with me. We were rolling around on the floor of a dark, only lit by the sun shining through the windows and a few candles, huge glorious cabin. The walls were painted black but I’d splattered some bright colors of paint onto the walls to make the place seem happier. I’d also splatter painted the wooden parts of our bunk bed and changed the covers the when I arrived to Camp Half-blood, from a disturbing dark blue to a green.
“Hey, I’m going to go the sword arena right now so we can have the rest of the day off for your birthday! You’re so lucky- birthday people always get the day off from training!” Nico said with a huff, calming himself down from laughing and getting up onto his feet. I gave him and smile and a nod telling him I’d meet him down at the arena in a bit. He ran out of our cabin in his pajamas, and I laughed. Minor mistake! He ran into the cabin almost a split second after he left. His usually slightly pale face was burning red and I nodded towards his wooden black dresser. He scrambled over to it grabbed some clothes and ran down to the camp restrooms to change. He came back within minutes throwing his clothes into his laundry hamper. Wow that boy was quick! I smiled as he sprinted right out of the cabin to start his training so we’d have the rest of our day to hang out and celebrate my birthday. He was so sweet!
I fell back onto my bed and remembered the first time I’d came to Camp Half-blood when I was nine. The fantastic camp for children half god, half human. I closed my eyes ready to picture how I came to Camp Half-blood.
“Grace honey! I’ve got to go, there’s something going on at the bank that I need to take care of!” my mother hollered to me from downstairs as I sat in my room on my pink and white spotted comforter thinking of all the adventures I’d ‘surely go on’ one day. My mom worked at the bank, and had a lot of somethings going on at the bank, making her have to leave often. “Kay! See you when you get back!” I’d hollered down to my mom and I heard her heels slap against our wooden floor as she made her way to our garage door.
She’d left within minutes and I’d sat there continuing to think about adventures. Suddenly, I’d heard rocks tapping at my window and I grinned thinking that the tapping might lead to an adventure. I looked out my bedroom window to see two girls playing jump rope. They motioned for me to come out of my house and join them. I’d stared at them and thought. My mother says to never leave the house when she’s gone and not to talk to strangers, but I’d conjured up that it would be okay because it was just outside of my house, with two harmless other nine year olds.
I’d walked downstairs and quickly but on my cute, green, dirty, converse and my black jacket. Then, I swung open my front door to see not little girls but some hags- with wings holding the jump rope two little girls had just been using. As I stared awestruck at these creatures a white van swung around the corner onto my road and stopped in front of my house, five kids jumping out of it. The winged hags, with slightly greened skin turned their black as night eyes, flittering between me and the five kids who’d brought a van. The two seemed incredibly annoyed by us both. They turned to the van first and walked slowly towards it. Out of the van were three boys and two girls. My eyes widened in fear.
The two hangs charged at the five teenagers and I gasped as the action piled up. Each kid pulled out some sort of weapon and slashed them around the hags until one reached the blade of a sword, got the tiniest cut and disappeared in a pile of dust. In minutes the same thing happened to the other hag. My mouth formed into a little o. The five kids ran towards me and I took a step back. One of the girls smiled at me. She had black as night hair and bright blue eyes. She wore a brown leather jacket over a concert t-shirt and wore dark skinny jeans with high-top converse. I reached out my hand and tugged at hers. The three boys and other girl smiled. I clutched to the one girls hand who had black as night hair. I whispered into her ear, “Make them drop the weapons. You too.” She nodded and motioned for them to drop their weapons. They did as she asked. “I’m Grace,” I announced. The kids nodded, “We know.”
“Creak…” the door of my cabin opened, and Nico walked in hollering, “I’m done! Now come with me!”
I sat up right on the bed, and remembered quickly of how I’d invited the kids in and we waited for my mother until she came and agreed to send me with them to be safe. I miss her so darn much.
I smiled at Nico and his eyebrows shot up. “Get dressed!” He squeaked and I laughed… I was still in my pajamas. He walked outside of the cabin and waited for me while I got dressed into my dark jean skinny jeans, black tank-top, white t-shirt over the tank-top that at the top showed the tank-top a bit, and then my green converse.
When I finished, I smiled and wondered what my little brother was planning. I loved the guts out of him!
