Jesse
I ran, barely taking breaths deep enough to sustain the speed, but knowing I had to keep going. Their footsteps were fading but still present. Those countless afternoons spent on the running track have finally paid off, I thought.
I ran, and ran, and ran, through a maze of roads and houses, making it difficult for them to track me. When I knew they were a fair distance away, I paused for energy on the street corner, in a seemingly familiar part of town. I remembered that I went here when I was younger, before everything changed. Up ahead was the café where me and my mom used to go to, before she turned to drugs and left me alone. I think that's why I haven't been here in so long.
I glanced over my shoulder quickly. It looks like they're gone. But I can't stay out here in the open for long, you never know who could be lurking. A few moments later I decided to visit the café, for old time's sake. As I made my way down the street, I noticed that a lot of the stores were closed, and have been for a while. This sparked my interest a little. However, the café was the same as it had been 10 years ago. The same black paint peeling off the old, dry wood. The same neon sign saying 'Open' that gave off a faint white glow which flickered occasionally. Squinting through the slightly opaque window, I saw that there wasn't many customers inside: an old couple on the far table and a man in his mid-thirties sitting by the bar, talking to the lady working there. I came to the door that was barely even useful; it was practically coming off the hinges and the handle was almost broken. I pushed it inwards gently, and was greeted by the familiar sound of the bell above the door, a little rusty but still the same.
The interior had changed drastically since I had last came however, as now it was somewhat cosy, with comfy-looking couches at the front, booths in the back and loud music playing from the jukebox (a rare item nowadays), as compared to the silent, industrial look and cold feel a whole decade ago.
I barely had time to take in my surroundings when the bar lady called, beckoning me to the bar. She had a kind look to her and I felt more relaxed than I did when I came in.
"Ordering anything?" She asked politely, probably noticing the tense look that was evident on my face. I studied the front page of the menu leaflets on the wall.
"Coffee." She gave me an expectant look. Ah. "Uh, one sugar and no milk."
"Straight black," she stated, the corner of her mouth curling up slightly, amused. "We got a daredevil here guys." I mustered out a polite smile whilst the other man by the bar read a newspaper that seemed to be over a year old. Odd, I thought.
However the voice pulled me out of my thoughts again. "Drinking in or taking out?" I think staying here would be good if they're still out looking for me, it's an unsuspicious place.
"Staying in, please," I managed to say. I assumed this meant she would bring it to me, so I chose a place to sit down. Unsuspecting or not, I still felt open and watched, so I chose the furthest booth away, where no one could see me. I sat down and immediately relaxed.
I was hidden; I was safe. I hadn't felt that way for a while.
The kind lady brought me my coffee in the cutest mug I had ever seen. It was shaped like a dog with it's tail for a handle. I couldn't help but giggle, which made her smile.
"You looked like you needed some cheering up," she said sweetly, and turned back to help another customer that had just came in; heard by the bell.
I took a sip of the coffee and closed my eyes. All the while, I could hear a new female voice exchanging pleasantries with the bar lady. I decided to take a quick look and that's when it all began.

Our eyes met instantaneously and I realised I could never look away again. The bar woman was saying something but she sounded far away, almost underwater.
I was never one to believe in all that cringy romance bullshit, but I think this was love at first sight. I took my coffee and made my way to the far booth. He was watching me intently the whole way, making my cheeks burn. When I reached the table, he gestured politely with his hand for me to sit in front of him. I obeyed and placed my coffee next to his, in the middle of the table. I studied his order receipt and made out the name-
"Jesse?"
The smile I received was enough to carry on the conversation.
