Detention.
Yeah, right, detention.
Five years of staying strong and I get detention. I find myself painting props for the drama club's musical. Mrs. Rodriquez, who happens to be my Spanish teacher and the Arts coordinator of the school, puts me in detention for punching a guy named Marcus Cowen.
Marcus Cowen, who turns out to be a homophobic a-hole, is now my high school hell. He is like everyone's biggest fear. However, I, Daniela Farrell, am not afraid of him. I am the only openly lesbian student at this school. Homophobic people, like Marcus, bully me all the time. He's freakishly tall and scary and all. But I was the only loser/lesbian, in fact, the only person who has punched him so far. At the moment, Marcus Cowen is my biggest bully, he would shove me to my locker, which is totally fine because I am really used to it. He has been doing it for five years actually. Truth is, I kind of anticipate the shoving every day. But today in Spanish class, something happened that made me punch Marcus.
Mrs. Rodriguez was doing all the SOPs before class; alphabet in Spanish and numbers one to fifty for now. I was mouthing, pretending I knew all the Spanish words everyone was babbling about. I was really getting sick of it. I mean, we looked like kindergarten kids, reciting the same crap every meeting.
I noticed Marcus Cowen behind me doing something stupid again. But I ignored him this time.
"Uh, Señora Rodriguez?" this girl interrupted the class. I have never seen this girl before. Was she new? Maybe she just transferred. She was really pretty and I liked her hair.
"Sí?" Mrs. Rodriguez responded, annoyed by the interruption.
Mrs. Rodriguez is around her 40s. She is a tall and not so attractive woman. I have been in this Spanish class for 2 times already, and the only Spanish words I know are, "Hola, si, and por favor." I wished to transfer, but it always gets denied.
"Uh," this new girl uttered and pointed her index finger at me, "she is on fire!"
Oh, this new pretty girl noticed me.
Wait, what did she say?
I felt my cellulite burning, like literally burning. I looked at my back. Oh, my gosh! Oh, my gosh! I am on fire! Holy cow! I panicked.
Everyone screamed and panicked. Everyone was looking at me. I heard Marcus' evil laugh behind me.
Finally, this new girl put out the fire on my back. Thank you, new girl. I looked at Marcus who was smirking evilly and suddenly I just attacked him.
"Marcus Cowen, I am gonna fucking beat your ugly face up!" but I was already punching him. Marcus tried to push me, but I was on top of him. And even though he may be freakishly tall, I seemed to have power over him, maybe because of the adrenalin and all, and also because I was so angry at him.
Then I heard a familiar voice yell. "Mr. Cowen and Ms. Farrell, principal's office, RIGHT NOW!"
I never saw Mrs. Rodriguez that mad. She was so red. I could see her veins on her forehead. I was certain she was so mad at Marcus right now, with all the fire and stuff. And also Mrs. Rodriguez didn't really like to be interrupted when she is teaching.
But I also think she was mad at me because I used inappropriate language in class, which I didn't really mean to say. I don't really say bad words, it was just I got so mad and I didn't think what I was to say.
I felt bad for myself. Not because I punched Marcus, I did not regret that. I felt bad because I had to say a bad word. It's just not right. My parents taught me this not-saying-bad-words thingy which I grew old with. My mom said that saying bad words doesn't really make you cool. But sometimes I hear her say them. But I don't want to judge her, especially when she's under a situation like I was in.

Principal Chopra is an old guy, he is actually shorter than I am. He's got grayish to white hair and he is an Indian, I kind of like mimicking his accent, it's really cool. And I am really good at mimicking. Anyways, I like Chopra because he's totally into Hinduism. I have seen his cool statues of different Hindu gods in his office. And I kind of like being sent to his office so that I get to see his collectibles.
He and Mrs. Rodriguez gave me two detentions actually. First, for using inappropriate language, that is I get to spend a precious hour at the auditorium everyday for the rest of the week: painting props for the drama club and listen to them sing and watch them dance, something like that. Second, for punching Marcus Cowen, which falls under physical injury, I get to clean bathrooms for 2 hours every day for the entire week, except for Wednesday. This type of punishment totally sucks because I know I don't deserve this. And, guess what, I get to start tomorrow.
Well, at least, Marcus had detention too, cleaning the football field everyday for the rest of the month. Also, he gets to consult Ms. Chang, the guidance counselor, every day after his classes until he gets better. Better? Yeah better, because that guy is crazy, bullying everyone, putting me on fire and who knows what he does to other kids at school.
I also wonder why he only got minimal punishment, maybe because he's a white dude. I don't know.
Still, I felt happy even if I get to clean bathrooms. With all these bullying he did to me, he could go to jail since he's already old enough. He should thank god he only got detention.
