First meeting:

Bobby met Kate a few months after she was born.
.
"Thankfully she looks like Emma."Bobby says leaning over the flimsy crib bought at a yard sale.
A four month old Katelyn grabs her foot and puts it in her mouth before making a gurgling noise. The old mans face softens at the sight.
"Ain't that the truth." Logan says taking a swig of beer.
"Are you ever gonna tell her? About her mother." Bobby says griping the side of the crib.
"How could I? There isn't a way to tell someone this." Logan says with his head low. "What if she turns out like her."
"Whatever your decision is. She's YOUR daughter. And nothing could ever change that. She may be half Emma, but she's also half you. That makes her good. I know she ain't a threat." Bobby says putting a hand on his shoulder.
"I know. I just wish we could go back to how things were. How could she keep that secret from me for a whole year?"
"Well neither of y'all exactly planned for your one night stand to lead to a baby." Bobby says shaking his head.
"I don't regret it though. I mean if I was gonna have a baby in this life, it would have to be on accident." Logan says with a smirk.
"Well what are you gonna name her?" Bobby says looking back at the child
" I was thinking Katelyn. After My mom Kate." Logan says letting he baby hold his thumb with a smile.
"I'm surprised. I thought you would pick something from the Rock and Roll hall of fame." Bobby says causing Logan to let out a breathy laugh.
"It's normal. and I want to give her every bit of normalcy that I can."
The immaturity player that Logan used to be, the hunter that told Bobby life was meaningless, was now gone. It seemed like he was a brand new person. The  way Logan looked at his daughter made Bobby wish he would have had a kid of his own. Just for a second. So he could have a reason to be better too.

Life with her real dad:

Logan was the complete opposite of John. He was kind, and loving and worshipped the ground Kate walked on. He rarely went out on hunts so he could be with her. When he wasn't on a hunt, he let her ride with him on his motorcycle, ate pancakes for dinner, played blackjack together, and watched cartoons all day. He was a talented guitarist and had a beautiful voice. He would sing her to sleep every night, no matter how tired. Her favorite was his rendition of the Scottish song "Wild Mountain Thyme". They were more like best friends than father and daughter. They would have "grown up" conversation at the diner table. Kate would hold her cup of juice and go on for hours about her day as Logan smiled into his cup of coffee to keep from laughing at the adorable little business woman.
When she was bad, Logan would accidentally yell and send her to her room without dessert. An hour later he would feel bad and slip a plastic baggy of cookies under the door with a note that says "sorry for yelling, I still love you". When he died, she was broken inside and the loud and fun loving girl she once was, vanished and it took years and The winchesters to bring her back again.

Taking her in:

"This is yours now." Bobby says awkwardly setting Katelyn's small bag on the creaking bed in his cabin. The six year old girl simply looked at the ground before slowly walking inside and standing still.
"There's food and cable. The channels are crap though. " he says trying to get her to feel comfortable. She stays silent and her eyes never leave her shoes.
" It's got a bed and.. do you like to read? I might have some books I bought for Dean read a while back." He says putting his hands in his pockets and letting out a sigh when she doesn't respond.
"I know it's a little dusty but I'll clean it. I didn't have time to fix it up." He says nervously taking a rag and wiping off the tables.
Kate stays silent and goes up to him and takes the cloth from his hands. She plays with it in her hands before slowly looking up.
"Thank you." She says so quietly Bobby questions if he actually her voice.
She then proceeds to sit on the floor and dust the area around her. Bobby looks down in awe as she focuses on every spot of dirt. As if a clean room would wash away all the horrible things she had to go through her entire life. Only three days ago did they burn her fathers body. Only three days ago did she scare the crap out of him and ask to be taught how to hunt. Now she was here, scrubbing the floor of her new room when most children would be crying. Her eyebrows furrowed and her lips pursed as she scrubbed with a focus that kind of scared the old man.
All he could say was, he knew this one was a fighter.
Bobby quickly went in the other room and returned with a second rag. Katelyn only looked up for a short second as he sat on the floor across from her. "Your welcome." He says with a small smile as they silently went back to work.

Hunter in training:

"Do you need a break?" Bobby asks already knowing the answer.
"No, I got it." Kate says looking at the target in the field across from her. Today was a particularly hard day of training for her because Bobby decided it was time for Kate to shoot at a much farther distance, and with a bigger gun.
The small 9 year old held the gun with a tight grip but struggled to keep her hands steady. The weight of the barrel looked like it was pulling her down but Bobby didn't dare try and take it away. He learned over the years that she had to be pushed until she asked for help. It was hard to watch but he knew she could handle it. He'd seen her grow physically and mentally over the last three years. She went from barely saying three words to him to basically cursing him out. At times he even felt guilty for enjoying the moments that Logan never got to have with her.
"Bobby?" Her little voice called and he walked over to her immediately knowing what she wanted.
He took hit gun off the ground and kneeled next to her.
"You're overthinking it again."
"I know I can't help it. It's too far away." She says with a frown letting the gun fall to her side.
"Do what I do." Bobby says aiming his gun at one of he targets.
With a sigh Katelyn does the same and waits for his instruction.
"Close your eyes. I want you to imagine that target, is the only thing standing between you, and what you want most in the world." Bobby says slowly.
"What are you imagining?" Bobby asks looking over at her.
"Finding what really killed my dad." She says with an angry face.
Bobby looked at her with wide eyes.
"You don't think it was a ghost?" He says more like a fact.
"My dad was the best hunter in the whole wide world. He didn't get killed by a ghost. He couldn't have." She says with a certainty, looking at him with her big brown eyes.
After a moment he speaks again.
"Now I want you to feel the gun. Every part of it. Feel the bullet in the chamber. And I want you to tell it where to go. You can do it. Now take a deep breath, and take control." Bobby says with a soft steady voice.
Kate breathes in and out and does exactly what he says. After a second a shot rings out and the target in front of them is blown to pieces.
Kate let's out a squeal and jumps up and down.
"Look, Bobby I did it! Did you see that!"
"Damn right you did! I'll tell you something else..." Bobby says after a moment of silence.
"Your daddy was one tough son of a bitch and whatever got him, had to be just as tough, but... whatever it is, better sleep with one eye open, because your gonna kick its ass." Bobby says giving her a small smile. He was never an affectionate person so he never really invaded her personal space for things like hugs.
Kate runs up to Bobby and gives him a tight hug before running back towards the cabin.
"I gotta go tell Sam about this and rub it in Dean's face!" She yells racing towards the phone.
