In 1959, a group of ten skiers led by Igor Dyatlov hiked the northern Ural mountains. There was a threat in the area there were in one night that caused them to tear themselves out of their tents. Some force occurred that caused all but one of them to die. The area on the east of the Kholat Syakhl mountain was renamed Dyatlov's Pass in honor of the victims.

However, the circumstances surrounding their deaths is unknown. It was believed that the skiers died of hypothermia but eventually their bodies were found to have major fractures. It was believed that the Mansi people who lived in the region might have attacked and killed them as they thought the skiers were trespassing on their property. Others believe that an avalanche caused their deaths.

There is even a theory saying that the skiers were killed by parachute mines used by the Russian military and that the mines were being tested. The explosions from the mines might have caused glowing orbs within the sky. In fact, those glowing orbs have led some to believe that extraterrestrial forces were responsible for their deaths
