Chapter Eight - No pulse

Chapter Eight

I didn’t hesitate.  As soon as the words left John’s mouth I opened Jo’s mouth and started to do the mouth-to-mouth procedure. 

                “Sherlock.” John’s quiet voice spoke from behind me but I didn’t turn.  I pressed my hands to her chest and tried desperately to get her heart going.  1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8..9..10.  I moved back to her mouth and did five more breaths.  “Sherlock, stop.” I was too focused on bringing Jo back than to listen to John.  I pressed on her chest again 1…2…3…4..5…6…7..8..9..10.  Come on Jo, stay with me.  Come on, you can do it.  I would’ve heard Mrs Hudson entering, I would’ve heard John’s pleas for me to stop, I would’ve noticed the blood that was now covering my hands…but I didn’t.  I just didn’t care.  I just wanted to get Jo breathing again…to bring her back.  John placed a hand on my shoulder and tried to pull me away.  “Sherlock, she’s dead.” His voice broke at the end of that sentence, but nevertheless, I swatted him away angrily.  How could he say that?  She could still be saved.  I breathed into her mouth one more time and almost gave up hope she started to gag.  I pulled away and John was instantly at her side again.  He helped me sit her up so she wouldn’t choke, I sat behind her and supported her back, neck and head whilst he held her hand and searched for her pulse. 

                “Mrs Hudson, can you get her some water please?” I asked her quietly, still holding Jo as she continued to gag.  Mrs Hudson nodded and rushed out of the room.  Gently, I patted Jo’s back in an attempt to help her stop coughing.  When Mrs Hudson returned with the water, Jo reached for it and started gulping it down.  After about 3 gulp she coughed it out again, back into the cup…but there was now blood in the cup too.  I looked at the cup in fright and realised she was now coughing up blood.  This wasn’t good at all.  I looked at John who was on his mobile.

                “Lestrade?  I can’t get a hold of a hospital, I need you to get an ambulance here right now, Jo’s dying.  She was hit by a rock and it’s cracked her skull.  She’s passed out, stopped breathing but Sherlock brought her back and now she’s coughing up blood.” He spoke at an unnaturally fast pace, due to his fear.  He hung up the phone and looked at me.  “Five minutes and the ambulance will be here.” He looked at Mrs Hudson who was quivering; this was all too much for the poor women at her age.  I nodded and he took her out, talking to her gently.  

It was less than five minutes when the ambulance arrived.  Two men, Lestrade and Donovan rushed into the apartment with a stretcher.  I groaned seeing Donovan, I really dislike that woman.  She returned my scowl but was soon sent out by Lestrade.  The two doctors tried to pick up Jo, but she clung to me refusing to go.  I stiffened when she pressed herself against me but wrapped my arms around her when I realised she was shaking.  I looked up at the two men.

                “I’ll take her.” I told them and gently picked her up.  I carried her to the stretcher and set her down.  She looked up at me, still coughing slightly and tears were in her eyes.

                “P..Please don’t leave m…me.” She half coughed half whimpered.  I  shook my head and held her hand.
