L's POV
"If you must know, I didn't do anything. I was accused of murdering some woman because I was apparently 'close' to her." Haley said.
"They didn't find you innocent?"
"No. They had pictures of me talking with the woman. There were several pieces of evidence that was presented to show my innocence, but they ruled me guilty because of one small picture."
I set my elbow on the table and rested my chin on my hand. She leaned away.
"Why are you so interested in my conviction?" She asked.
"I told you. I wanted to know what got you sent to jail. Anyway, how do you know the Shinigami known as Ryuk?"
"All of us know him. By 'us', I mean Shinigami. He carelessly throws his Death Notes into the human world and watches as a human destroys mankind."
I smiled slightly. A Shinigami can give away the power to kill by giving a human a book? "Is that so? Well, I guess I'm done questioning you. I want to keep an eye on you for a few days to see what you do. If you will follow me to your new room."
I stood up, and she got to her feet. I led her out of the room, explained my plan to Yagami-San when we reached him, and started leading her up the stairs. She cringed away from something as she walked up the stairs behind me.
She ran to catch up with me, skipping steps as she went, and clung to my shirt.
If that was the Shinigami, Ryuk, what is scaring her? I wondered.
I walked her to a door. It was the installed apartment like room next to Misa's. I opened the door and pulled her inside. She walked ahead of me and sat on the couch that was there. I got on my knees in front of her and unlocked her wrist chains.
She screamed when I tried to take off the collar.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"Don't! Ryuk always touches my neck! I don't like it!" She screamed.
"Shh! Calm down! I won't touch your neck, okay? I'll try not to anyway."
She looked at me, and her eyes were wide with fear. "Do you promise?"
"I promise."
She relaxed and returned to her normal sitting position. I climbed onto the couch next to her and unhooked the collar. She didn't say anything when my finger brushed against her neck.
"I thought you didn't like your neck being touched." I whispered.
"I don't. I just don't want to yell at you again."
"And why is that?"
"You don't deserve it."
I smiled and got to my feet. "You have to stay in here until one of us comes to get you. If you need anything, the cameras are on, so I will be able to see and hear you."
"Can it be you that comes and gets me? I don't like those cops. They yell at me, but you stay calm and patient with me."
"If I'm not busy, I will come and get you."
She smiled at me. I left the room and closed the door, locking it before I turned and went downstairs.
I sat in front of the monitors and looked at the screen she was on. She still remained in place, her eyes on the door.
"Ryuzaki, why did you take the chains off?" Yagami-San asked.
"She is locked in a room. She doesn't need them." I answered, biting my thumb.
She got to her feet, walked over to the wall that separated her room from Misa's, and banged on it.
"Turn that racket off! It's giving me a headache!" She growled.
The noise coming from upstairs got quieter, and Haley sighed in relief.
~~~~~~~
The next morning, Light took both of the girls breakfast. Misa was overjoyed to see him. Haley didn't look at him as he set the plate down on the table in front of her.
"Do you like apples?" Light asked, trying to kick up a conversation.
"No." Haley hissed.
She cringed again and crawled away from something. Light sighed and left, leaving the plate where it was. I flicked my eyes to Misa's camera. She was already eating. I looked at Haley again. She wouldn't touch the food. I got to my feet when she knocked the plate from the table. The food splattered on the floor.
"Where are you going, Ryuzaki?" Light asked as I walked by him.
He was at the bottom of the steps. I went up the stairs and stood in front of Haley's room. I hesitated before I opened it. She was staring at the table, her arms wrapped tightly around her legs.
"You didn't have to do that." I said.
"I don't eat any of that." She answered.
"What do you eat?"
"I only eat sweets."
I smiled and walked out of the room.
