Chapter Three: When the Day Met the Night

I sat on the couch, listening to music while doing my homework and waiting for my father to come home. He had gotten his shipment today so he was making sure that things went down as planned.

Today we had a brutal tennis practice; Coach Vance made us run the whole time. Now, I have a mountain of worksheets and I have a match tomorrow.

My roommate, Mitch, came down the stairs, scratching his bear chest. He made his way into the kitchen and through my headphones, I heard the clattering of beer bottles. As I was writing down the answer to number four on my Algebra homework, he sat down on the couch.

I took out my earphones, pausing the music so he could talk to me.

"A few of my friends are coming over."

"Female?" I asked, raising my head to look him in the eyes.

"Uh, no. Just a few guys from my class. I just wanted to warn you. Might want to finish your homework in your room." I shook my head. If I worked in my room, I would see my bed and be tempted to just lay down and fall asleep. Plus, I had to wait for my dad to get home.

The doorbell rang as he opened up his beer bottle, taking a gulp.

"Well... I warned you." When he opened the door, four guys filed into the room. They looked at me with hungry eyes. I was tempted to call Callum, but he couldn't do anything against four college guys, so I decided not to.

"Who's this pretty, young thing?" One of them asked. I bit my lip as I continued to finish my homework.

"Come on. Leave her alone." I heard Mitch say as I reached for my iPod. I put the earphones in and pressed play, Nirvana flooding into my ears. I sighed as I continued my homework. When I finish this worksheet, I have to do some practice problems from the textbook because I don't understand it. Then I have to move onto my chemistry worksheet and problems from the textbook. Oh crap! I can't forget about the lab that is due in two days. Also, I have a vocab test on SAT words in English tomorrow, I have to study for that. I have to look over my notes for AP Euro and read from the textbook. Did I do my French homework on the bus? Yes, I did.

I looked at the time on my iPod and groaned. It was only 9:42 PM and I was already tired. Maybe Mitch can help me study for my vocab test tomorrow while I cook them something to eat.

I took out my earphones and looked up to see them still standing there.

"Are you guys hungry?" They snapped their gazes to me and nodded their heads quickly. "I can make you some food. And Mitch, can you help me study for my vocab test?" Mitch shrugged his shoulders and I took out my note cards, handing them to him as I walked into the kitchen. I rifled through the cabinets, searching for food.

"Is baked ziti okay?" I shouted so they could hear me in the living room.

"We're right here, no need to shout." One of them said and I spun around. They were all seated at the table, staring at me.

"What's your name, beautiful?" One of them asked me.

"Sloane. What are your names?" I asked. Mitch pointed to them as he said their name.
