Scene 5
(Scenery, Melissa’s house; Briar, Delilah; Most of stage is the house, a little bit is outside of the house, part of house is in black again, it’s the secret room; Briar is walking into the house, Delilah is off-stage R)
Briar
(Enters house)
I can’t believe we couldn’t find anything on that lady! We didn’t even find a name! Something else was strange… (Goes to worn couch, examines pictures taken of the body) Her cheeks… Carbon monoxide poisoning gives you cherry red cheeks… but hers were not, in fact she was rather pale! She couldn’t have been killed by the carbon monoxide! No puncture marks… Maybe a sort of poison.
(Briar paces back and forth pouring over the preliminary evidence results, Delilah enters R)
Briar
The cups contents do not show any signs of poisons. Perhaps some type of drug.
(Delilah knocks at the door)
Delilah
Yoohoo! Miss McCarthy! I was never able to deliver your letter yesterday, I’m not sure why. But here it is, I just need you to sign for it!
Briar
(goes to door, opens door)
… Aren’t you the woman who called yesterday telling us about the murder?
Delilah
(gasps) There was a murder? Who died?!
Briar
We aren't sure, all we have is a "McNugget" or something. There wasn’t even a file on her at the police station. You wouldn't happen to know anybody by a name similar to that, would you?
Delilah
Hmm... I might. Let me show you their house! We are very close, it's almost like we are standing in it!
Briar
.... Right. Could you perhaps just tell me their name?
Delilah
Sure! Hmm…. I don’t remember. Now, where is Miss McCarthy? I have an envelope that needs her signature! Maybe she could help.
Briar
Who is “Miss McCarthy”?
Delilah
She’s the dead lady, you’re standing in her house. Now, where is she? I need to get this envelope to her, it’s very important!
(Briar has a look of confusion on her face as she is having difficulty following Delilah’s train of thought)
Briar
How important? Would anybody be willing to kill for it?
Delilah
How would I know, I don’t know what’s in it. But it’s very important! You know, I used to get letters like this. But they were often telling me I needed to pay for something. I didn’t like the attitude of the letters, so I threw them away.
Briar
… You’ve got to be kidding me. (sighs) Thank you very much for your time. I’m going to have to ask you to leave now while I continue My investigation of the crime scene...
Delilah
See, now you’re starting to sound like those letters! Always zooming past you while skipping past the real information. Either that or they move along real slow, almost like they’re sleeping. Like Miss McCarthy! Yesterday, I was trying to deliver a letter to her, but she wouldn’t wake up from her nap! Those kinds of letters just mosey on, and don’t care if you have to do something. So, I just throw them away! Everybody does it. Even Miss McCarthy threw away that package I delivered to her a few days ago. Maybe she was supposed to pay for something. Those letters are so boring, Always skipping past the real information, and-
Briar
(interrupts) How did you know she threw away a package?
Delilah
Why it’s right there in the garbage! Maybe I should become a detective!
Briar
(goes to garbage, takes out box)
Hmm… this box came from the Fizzy Shore shop on Beach Boulevard!
Delilah
Should you really be snooping in Miss McCarthy’s garbage? She might wake up any second! Then again, she might be having another out of body experience. I’ve had one of those you know!
Briar
Sure. I’m positive she won’t mind, if she’s sleeping as deep as you say she is. Would you happen to know what was in this box?
Delilah
Nope, can’t say that I do. Say, I really have to get going. Letters to deliver and such. When Miss McCarthy returns to her home, could you give this to her?
(Delilah hands Briar envelope, Delilah runs off R)
Briar
Umm, I guess… Hey wait! You don’t actually think I’m going to believe that whole… (looks around) Act….Next stop will be the Fizzy Shore shop. Maybe I can get some much needed answers to some of my questions. Hmm.. (mutters as she walks off R)
