The dorm room was quiet. The clean wooden floors squeaked as I trotted over to my bed and hopped on, resting against my stuffed elephant, Lottie, that I've had since I was 4. I pulled out my phone which was resting on top of my nighstand and scrolled through Instagram, not even paying attention to which pictures I was double tapping.
My mind drifted off and I couldn't help but think about Will. I mean, it's crazy, I hardly knew him, I hadn't even said a word to him, yet I just felt like I knew him. The sudden burst of air hitting my face from the swinging door interrupted my daydream and I looked up to find Katie, my roomate, stomping towards her bed on the oppostie side of the room.
She stomped around settling in and dropping her bag onto the floor. She sat down on her bed, letting the sunlight from the window above her flood down and leave patterns on her forehead.
"God he's so freaking annoying!" she screamed in anger.
"What?" I muttered, not really caring but still asking in concern.
"Ugh this new kid, Will. He freaking trampled me onto the ground and let me fall flat on my face into the dirt. Everyone around me started laughing." she explained wiping a few brown smudges off her face. "Ugh I need to go wash this off. I'll be in the bathroom if you need me." she stormed out of the room and slammed the door and my mind began to drift off again to the pounding of her storming feet.
Will? There can't be two new Will's can there? Obviously it's not the same Will I met today. Oh who am I kidding of course it is. Is she just exagaratting? Was it on purpose? Was it an accident? Surely it was an accident. He's not mean enough to do it on purpose. Is he? Once again, my little daydream was broken by a knocking on the door. I hopped up onto my feet and slowly stumbled towards the door, not entirely sure why someone would be there. I swung the door open and looked straight into the eyes of Will.
Will? What was he doing here? Am I just hallucinating?
"Um hi," he mumbled, "is Katie here? I never got to apologize for something." he explained shyly. As i heard the words stumble out of his mouth, they seemed odd. It seemed as if he wasn't speaking American, like he was speaking in an accent, as if he was from somewhere else.
"Oh ya, she told me." I replied, intrigued to find out more about him.
"So...where is she?" he asked after a series of awkward seconds.
"Oh 'um she's in the bathroom right now. She'll be back soon. Do you want to wait here?" I asked.
"Sure." he replied, biting the skin off of the top of his lip. I opened the door a bit more to let him in, then returned back to my comfy spot on the bed. "So.." he said, making the silence even more awkward than it was before.
"So..." I replied, having no clue what to say to him. "Where are you from?" I asked after questioning in my head what I should say to him.
"'Oh I'm from um...Michigan." he answered, as if he wasn't totally sure of his answer.
"Cool! I'm from Ohio." I told him, a little too energetic. He hadn't asked me where I was from, but I was so intrigued to know more about him, I just wanted to speed up the conversation.
"Interesting." he replied, obviously not as intrigued as I am. I know what I should do, take the first step, but I was nervous. I had never asked a guy on a date before. I took a deep breath, swallowed the dry lump in my throat, and muttered out the words.
"I know this seems kind of weird, but do you wanna grab a coffee sometime or something? I said, my voice shaking. Suddenly his eyes brightened up and his eyebrows raised up as if he were excited for something.
"Sure. That sounds great." he answered. He didn't sound entirely sure of his answer, but it was good enough for me.
"Great." I said with a giant smile spread across my face. I was about to continue the conversation, finally get to know him, when Katie came storming in with a soppy face and a frustrated look.
"You. What are you doing here?" she questioned angrily.
"I just wanted to apologize. I didn't mean to trip you earlier I was just being clumsy and wasn't looking where I went. I offered you my hand to pick you up but you had turned the other way and didn't see me. I really am sorry." he said, and I could tell by his tone of voice, it was meaningful.
"Well, it was really rude of you whether it was an accident or not, but I accept your apology." she said, not even bothering to make eye contact with him. He smiled as a quick reply then left, without even saying goodbye to me. Not even saying goodbye at all. I turned back around to look at Katie, but she seemed to have no sort of expression on her face. Butterflies churned in my stomach as I thought about our coffee date, or whatever it was, and how mysterious he was, how different he was.
"What was that?" I asked Katie, kind of confused as to how everything went down.
Katie looked me straight in the eye and simply shrugged her shoulders and replied, "I have no idea."
