My life in 2047

This is Actually Happening

I remember when I was younger I used to jump from my dock into the river. Now there is no dock. It's covered with water. Water levels have risen so much over the years that this place will we flooded soon. When I am driving, I am at the same level as the water. All of my friends have left this town, but me, and my best friend Ava. I grew up here, and that's where I plan to stay. News reporters say that it is dangerous to live here, and that a disaster could strike at any moment. 

'I'm here' Ava said, texting me.

'Ok, come in.'

'Ok.' She replied.

"Heyy" She spoke as she walked in the door and hugged me.

"Hey." I said as I hugged her back.

"Have you heard about what's been going on? The water levels have risen another two Inches in the past week."

"Yeah, but I cant leave." I said.

"Why not?"

"I grew up here, there's too many memories that I cant just leave behind. I'm not going."

"Do you want to drown!? I'm trying to knock some sense into you."

"I can't go, and you know why"

"Ok. Then I'm staying too. You're not doing this alone."

I nodded my head in agreement.

"Are you sure?" I asked.

"Positively"

We hugged once again. Then an ear-splitting sound on the speakers made us jump. 

'BEEP BEEP BEEP' The Emergency Broadcast system went off.

"Here's another one of those test's they do every week now" Ava said, rolling her eyes.

'This is NOT a drill. Water levels are rising rapidly. The people need to evacuate immediately." 

"What?" I said confused.

"Ok. We have to go." Ava screeched.

"I can't."

"We have to." Ava said.

"I thought you said you were staying with me. Either stay, or go on a plane and get to somewhere safe, but I'm staying."

Ava opened her laptop and looked at the available flights to get her away from here. All of them were booked. 

"What am I gonna do?" Ava asked. 

"We have to stay" I replied.

Ava and I went outside to look at how the water level was increasing, and it was going onto the grass where the ground level was usually about a foot above the water. My dock was gone, under the water, all of those memories. Lost. Forever.
