Chapter 7: Cactching Up
The two walked back to camp in complete silence, Alex feeling guilty, and Riley still shaken up by their narrow escape. One thing they both felt was luck, niether of them thought they should've survived the pack of wolves. Alex was begining to smile, he shook off the negative feelings and began to feel optomistic. To break the silence, Alex once again took the golden, rectangular object out of his pocket and examined it.
"Hey Riley... what do you think this is?" Alex was distracted by her blank stare. He continued,"Do you have any guesses of what it might be used for?" he looked over to her and she continued to walk, staring blankly into the distance. Her feet kept moving and her arms were crossed. Alex could tell she was either frieghtened, cold, or furious at him.
"OH. I have an idea..." Alex paused shortly. He took Riley's backpack and started rummaging through it. Alex and Riley both stopped walking. His eyes lit up when he found what he was loking for. He pulled out a small knife and cut into his finger, then squeezed the blood into the small, golden dvice. Nothing happened, the contraption lit up momentarily, then flickered out.
"What the hell are you doing?" Riley wrapped up his hand, and looked at him with eyes of confusion and disappointment. Riley was begining to feel like talking, she stopped shaking and calmed down.
"I thought it was a portal... like the one we have at home." Alex replied. One eye brow was raised at the mysterious contrapption.
Riley's jaw dropped, and she grabbed Alex's wrist and dashed at the woods. She saw something but Alex couldn't tell what. He looked at her face and saw slight happines. He looked down to see a group of rookies just hanging around the end of the river. He looked up and saw the camp in the distance. They'd grown silent again.
"So, uh how's... life. Watcha' been up to in the few weeks i hadn't seen you?" Alex mumbled, awkwardly breaking the silence. Riley chuckled at his fumbling of words.
"Nothing much. They told me I had to come back to the camp to help train the rookies. So before that I decided to enjoy my last two weeks of freedom. I went out partying, smoking illegal stuff, drinking strong alcoholic beverages, lots of kissing strangers, hooking up with my girlfri-" Alex quickly interrupted her.
"Girl-friends right, like a group of your 'besties', not girlfriend as in..." Alex began blushing, his thought was unfinished but expressed perfectly. Riley raise her hands in the air yawning.
"No, my girlfriend as in my fling. Im experimenting nothing serious." She broke off her sentence chuckling a little." So how are things with your girly friend." Riley said with a smirk on her face. "Anything 'spicy'?" Riley started laughing. Alex blushed.
"Not really. I we keep trying but anytime we start. something interupts us." Alex said still blushing. It was kind of awkard for him because Alex felt like he was talking to his siter. Alex then gave her examples of him and Brianna being interrupted.
"You have to make sure to keep things interesting or she'll get bored." Riley said in a professional voice. Alex's face shrunk, the thing he feared the worst he was just re-surfaced. "Hahaha I'm just fucking with you Alex, you had told me that you thought she was getting bored with you a while back. Your a cool kid, i guess, she won't get bored with you." Riley said building up his confidence.
"Thanks." Alex said as he ran his fingers through his hair.
Then Riley and him walked through a bush and they were in camp. Riley told Alex he had about 1 minute before he would get caught. She dissapered into her cabin, while Alex snuck into the medical center through the back. Just as he entered through the back door he saw the doornob to the front doors jiggle, and a silhoulette of a woman in the foggy windows. Alex instinctively ran into the bathroom, he grabbed a face towel laced with very fine silk, and moistened it. Then he quickly cleaned scracthes and washed dirt spots off of his skin. Then as he heard the nurse pull back the curtains around his bed, he made it sound like he was throwing up.
