Part III

Monday morning I wake up at 5:30 and groan internally. Even though I might have someone to talk to today, I still loathe school. I groan all the way through my shower and only wake up to stuff my contacts in, run the brush through my hair, and brush my teeth. I grab a muffin and coffee my mom made me, and my backpack and keys, then head to my car.

A few minutes later, I'm at Mai's new house. It's smaller than mine, about average sized and tan. I honk once, and she hops out the door, running to my car in the chilly weather.

"Hey!"
"Hey Mai!"
"So, ready for my first day?"
"I hope you are..."
She laughs.
"Well we have homeroom together, so at least we can stick together."

When we get to school, we walk in together, and people do stare. Honestly, we're such a small school that new kids are always a big deal, but she's with me it's an even bigger deal. We wind our way down the halls until we reach Ms. Perry's homeroom. She introduces herself to Ms. Perry, then slides into the seat next to me.

"That lady talks a mile a minute, jeez!"
"Just wait until math," I laugh
We hush then because announcements are on. We stand and say the pledge then listen as the principal reads off the days schedule. Finally, the static cuts out. I turn back to Mai.

"Ready for history class?" I ask
"Nope."
I open my mouth to agree, but the bell rings just then. We grab our backpacks and head for the doors. I lead the two of us down to the C wing, and back to the side of the classroom where we both sit.

Two more periods go by, and it's lunchtime. I meet Mai by her locker, then we head to lunch. We go through the lines, me telling Mai what's good. (Honestly? Nothing.)

I lead her over to my usual table. Instead of the stereotypical tables, our school has resteraunt like tables, and we find one made for two.
We begin eating, and she tells me about math, the class I didn't have with her.

"And it's so weird! I swear no one else here has red hair!"
"Well nobody else here is half Indian!"
She explodes in laughter, but stops when we realize we are no longer alone.

"Hi. Um. I'm Alexander. Alex."
He's a tall boy, blond and lanky, and shy looking.
"Can I... sit here?"
"Sure," I say. He must be another new student.
I fill him in on who Mai is, as well introduce myself.

And just like that
