***************

Kai and Shiro walked back towards their apartments. Kakashi had given everyone more information about the training (don't eat breakfast, bring your weapons, 66% fail, etc.), but they'd left as soon as possible to get away from their new teammates. There was only so much socializing they could take, and the introductions today had exceeded their limit for the next year.

"Are those idiots really ninja?" Shiro scowled, still in a foul mood. "They seem more like stupid kids that'll just get us all killed."

"Knock it off Shiro." Kai was in no mood to listen to his friend's venting today, so his words came out harsher than he meant. "We're just kids ourselves. The only reason you're so irritated is because your trick of pretending to be a ninja cat was exposed."

Shiro blinked, looking like she'd been slapped. She opened her mouth to say something, but no words came out. Finally, she sighed. "You're right." The corners of her mouth rose. "But those three are still annoying."

"That we can agree on." Kai grinned, but it was only for a brief moment before he turned serious again. "Are you sure it was okay to tell them your real name like that?"

Shiro stretched her arms, yawning. "It's fine. I'm sure that old geezer already told Kakashi-sensei, and it's not like these soft-hearted leaf ninja are going to kill me just because I'm from the Yuki clan." Then she paused, lowering her voice as she glanced at Kai. "What about you? It's almost been two weeks since--"

"I'm fine." Kai cut her off. He didn't want to think about that issue for now. Shiro took the hint and dropped the subject, but he could still feel her gaze on him.

Kai looked up at the sky to escape the awkward feeling he'd created. There was still an hour or two before sunset. "Want to get some last minute sparring in? It's been a while since we fought a Jonin."

"Sure." Shiro grinned. "As long as you don't mind losing."

The Next Day...

Kai and Shiro arrived at the training field about ten minutes before the meeting time, hoping to find a good hiding place before Cell 7 arrived.

Unfortunately, they were already there.

"Morning guys!" Naruto shouted as soon as they were in earshot. Sasuke just glared as usual, while Sakura greeted them once they got close enough to talk normally.

"Hi." Once again in cat form, Shiro only gave a short greeting, Then she climbed a tree and laid down, pretending to sleep.

Naruto moved next to Kai. "Is she always like that?" The blonde spoke softly, as if afraid Shiro would overhear.

"No. She's just not a morning person." And she doesn't trust you three yet.

Kai kept the second half of his answer to himself. Shiro would open up when she was ready.

"Why is she always transformed into a cat?"

"Long story." Kai sighed and followed Shiro's lead, climbing a tree before the blonde could think up anymore questions. Then he found a comfortable spot and settled in to wait for Kakashi.

He'd never imagined how long that wait would be.

By the time Kakashi finally showed up, the genin had been waiting for almost half the day. "Good morning class!"

"""You're late!!!""" Seeing Kakashi wave like nothing happened was the final straw. Naruto, Kai and Sakura couldn't resist venting their frustration.
