I wake to the smell of freshly baked bread and some kind of soup. The scent of it made my stomach growl. Once I wake up a bit more the memories of the night before come flooding back sending me into a sudden panic that only grows worse as Sylvio shoots up right and searches around frantically for a clue on where we are and how we got here. A small old lady walks out and places the fresh bread and soup I had smelt earlier on the small wooden table next to the small bed we are laying on.
“You mustn’t worry children, you’re safe now.” She places a frail hand on my shoulder and beckons to the food with her free hand. I eagerly lean forward and grab a slice of bread before sitting cross-legged on the bed and tasting it. Sylvio was not so trusting, he does not move he locks his eyes onto this strange woman and speaks and a calm yet firm voice.
“Who are you?” his eyes narrow and he sits as if he is about to pounce.
“Don’t worry child, No demons can get you in here.” He looks her over a bit more and even though he is sceptical he gives in to the hunger and pulls the food towards him.
“What’s your name?” I ask as I turn towards the lady that now sits in a large, overly padded armchair.
“Victoria” She rests her hands in her lap and smiles kindly as we eat.
“What happened and why are we here?” I manage to say through the mouthful of food, spitting a great amount of it out.
“Well you see your father is a stupid man, that stupidity caused the last of the human race to be wiped off the face of the earth.” She says it so calmly, with a voice so steady that it takes me a while to process.
“What do you mean?” Sylvio pipes up, cautiously questioning the events of last night.
“Those who did not die within the walls tried to flee in boats that were quickly sunk by the mermaids and men of the ocean. You two, on the other hand were taken by an angel ,Agatha and a devil ,Victor.” She states it so calmly that it almost seems like a joke.
“But, but why did this happen? I dont understand. If the whole human race was eradicated then why are you and Sylvio and I still alive?” She laughs slightly and shakes her head.
“Well you see I’m not actually human and neither are you, well not completely anyway.”
